out what to do, passengers waited on board

passengers were processed and given a place to sleep. They knew little
of the day’s events. The crew didn’t really
tell us much. Of course we didn’t really know
what was going on. Reporter:
They quickly found out. There’s the plane.
You can’t miss that. [crowd murmuring] Incredible. Reporter: All night,
plane by plane, the passengers were allowed
to disembark. But their was little anger
with their own plight. I think we were just happy
to be on the ground at that point, given
what we had heard. Reporter: Every school,
church halls and basements made in to make-shift shelters. 750 at this Gander school. Many not knowing
even where they were. A lot fewer people know

a desperate call for help was answered
by local residents. The biggest need for food,
towels and bedding. Getting lots of volunteers,
lots of donations, blankets, towels, food, and there’s still
a lot more to do, so we’re pushing on. Reporter:
All of what’s happening is being appreciated by
the unexpected tourists. We’re very grateful and I would
hope that Americans would treat Canadians
with the same kindness. The people in this town should
be blessed forever. Reporter: This morning,

here helping out? We came here yesterday morning
and we worked until 9:00, 10:00 last night,
we came back again 7:00 this morning. Reporter:
Most of the food donated, cooked in a school home
economics class room. None of this extraordinary
hospitality lost on the visitors. But everybody, I mean, everybody in the whole
town has pulled together. And we’re chuffed to bits.
We really are proud. You’re absolutely great, you
all. You’re lovely people. I just hope we could do the same if it ever happened
in our country. Reporter:
Joe Dunn is giving back. Serving breakfast to the town
that fed and housed him for five days when his plane was forced
to land in Gander on September 11th. Today he was joined by a dozen
other US passengers who’ve returned on this day. I can only equate it to a love
from a grandmother. That’s really what it felt like. The matrons in town,
it was really — it was their caring,
it was just unbelievable. It was a great example
of the human spirit. Reporter: That caring has turned
in to friendship. Dunn continues to stay in touch and reunite with the woman
who gave him shelter. Stella Brazil welcomed
other passengers in to her home on 9/11. She’s just one of hundreds of
local people that did the same. I think it’s just
our nature to be that way and nobody
looked at it as being any type of a big
sacrifice. Reporter: The US Ambassador
came to Newfoundland to say thank you, and remember
this day in a way most other Americans aren’t. On the one hand, it’s a very sad, tragic event that we’re
here to commemorate. But on the other hand,

I’m 20 years old and I identify as two spirit but primarily as a woman. My name is Phoenix. I’m 17 and my pronouns are
“he, him” and “ze, zir”. Gender itself is not just
a binary spectrum. Like, there’s literally
a constellation of gender identities. And, we’re all floating somewhere
in that constellation and we really need to, like, take in to account that there’s
all kinds of possibilities, and each individual’s
experience is unique. My spiel on gender. Um, the gender binary, which is
male and female, which is what is recognized
in the general non-trans population is, it’s not, it’s an outdated principle. The hardest part was accepting the fact that, well, maybe I’m not really just a feminine boy after all.
Maybe I really am a transgender woman. And that I’m just, I am a woman regardless
of how I present myself and I don’t have to conform
to any of the societal stereotype of what
makes a woman either. I initially came out primarily as non-binary. And it was difficult to get
people to recognize that, hey there are things outside
of male and female and that it’s possible to be
one or the other, whether it be what you’re
assigned at birth or not what you’re assigned
at birth or anything in between. Common misconceptions
about being trans is that there’s just one
specific way to do it and that’s like,
a very binary idea. Gender, as most people know it, might be very binary and,
it’s like, you’re either one or the other. And if you’re trans, you either
want to be the other. I had that anxiety rolling in my
mind, too, because, like, then suddenly there was the — I knew I was going to have
to answer questions because of the assumptions about are you attracted to men,
which I’m actually not. Myself, I’m never want to confine myself
to that binary. And so when I choose to express myself
differently or change my body,
it can be very confusing and people have to know that you can’t try to trap people and you might think that you’re
