>>OMAR KHADR TALKS TO CBC NEWS IN THE WAKE OF HIS MULTIMILLION DOLLAR SETTLEMENT FROM THE GOVERNMENT.>>>GOOD EVENING, I’M ROSEMARY BARTON AND THIS IS “THE NATIONAL.”>>>WE HAVE REACTION TO THE CHAOS AND AN APOLOGY.>>IT IS NOT JUST WRONG. IT IS DISGUSTING.>>Rosemary: AND MUCH MORE FROM THE POLARIZING FIGURE.>>WHAT DO YOU SAY TO CANADIANS WHO DO NOT BELIEVE YOU ARE A GOOD GUY. THEY DON’T BELIEVE YOU CAN CHANGE LIKE THIS.>>IT IS AN HONOUR TO BE WITH YOU.>>Rosemary: A LONG-AWAITED MEETING. DONALD TRUMP AND VLADIMIR PUTIN DEAL WITH AN AWKWARD SUBJECT.>>>A LOT OF CHANGES IN ELECTRIC CARS.>>WE ARE THROWN INTO THE ERA. [♪♪♪]>>Rosemary: FROM THE MOMENT HE WAS ACCUSED OF KILLING A U.S. SOLDIER IN AFGHANISTAN, HE SPARKED EMOTIONALLY-CHARGED DEBATE. WAS HE A CHILD SOLDIER USED BY HIS FAMILY OR WAS HE A TERRORIST. OTTAWA’S DECISION TO APOLOGIZE AND PAY HIM MONEY WILL CEMENT EXISTING OPINIONS PROBABLY. THERE IS A CRUCIAL FACT AT PLAY AS WELL. THIS IS NOT JUST A POLITICAL BATTLE. IT IS A LEGAL ONE. THIS COUNTRY’S HIGHEST COURT SAID KHADR IS A CANADIAN CITIZEN WHOSE RIGHTS WERE VIOLATED BY HIS OWN GOVERNMENT. CATHERINE CULLEN STARTS OUR COVERAGE.>>A NICE DAY.>>IT IS A REALLY NICE DAY.>>Reporter: HE LOOKS RELAXED. OMAR KHADR MAY BE THE MOST DIVISIVE FIGURE IN CANADA RIGHT NOW.>>Reporter: LET M ASK YOU ABOUT THE APOLOGY. WHY DOES IT MATTER?>>Interview: IT RESTORES A LITTLE BIT OF MY REPUTATION.>>Reporter: THE GOVERNMENT IS TRYING TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE TO ITS REPUTATION. BUILDING BOMBS THAT KILLED CANADIAN SOLDIERS. THIS DEAL, THE GOVERNMENT MINISTERS SAID IS THE RESULT OF WHAT HAPPENED AFTER. AT GUANTANOMO BAY. INCLUDING HIS INTERROGATION BY CANADIAN OFFICIALS.>>THE SUPREME COURT OF CANADA HAS SAID CLEARLY AND UNEQUIVOCALLY THAT THAT BEHAVIOUR ON THE PART OF THOSE CANADIAN OFFICIALS WAS WRONG. AND YOU MAY WANT TO DISMISS THE RULE OF LAW AND THE CONSTITUTION, BUT IF YOU DO THAT, YOU ARE FUNDAMENTALLY UNDERMINING THE INTEGRITY OF THE COUNTRY.>>Reporter: AND PERHAPS AN ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF HOW SENSITIVE, IT IS, NOBODY SAID THE WORD “SORRY.”>>WHY IS THAT?>>THE APOLOGY WAS ISSUED IN WRITTEN FORM. AND IT WAS PREPARED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE PARTIES.>>Reporter: EVEN THAT WRITTEN APOLOGY ITSELF ONLY SAYS CANADIAN OFFICIALS MAY HAVE PLAYED A ROLE IN RELATION TO HIS ORDEAL ABROAD. THE TERMS OF KHADR’S DEAL MEAN THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT PUBLICLY TALKING ABOUT THE AMOUNT HE RECEIVED. CBC NEWS HAS CONFIRMED IT IS $10.5 MILLION. BUT NO ATTEMPT TO DOWNPLAY WILL TEMPER THE OUTRAGE SOME FEEL OVER THIS DEAL.>>IT IS NOT JUST WRONG. IT IS DISGUSTING. THIS ADDITIONAL PAYMENT OF TAXPAYERS DOLLARS IS A SLAP IN THE FACE TO THE MEN AND WOMEN IN UNIFORM. TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE LOST LOVED ONES ON THE BATTLEFIELD.>>Reporter: THEN THERE IS THE WIDOW OF THE SOLDIER KILLED. SHE AND ANOTHER SOLDIER INJURED IN THE ATTACK SUCCESSFULLY SUED KHADR IN THE U.S. AND WON DAMAGES OF MORE THAN $130 MILLION. THEY HAVE SEEN NONE OF IT.>>IF OMAR KHADR IS TRULY SORRY FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE, THAT MONEY WOULD BE GIVEN DIRECTLY TO THE FAMILY OF SERGEANT SPEER.>>Reporter: THE LAWYER FOR THE SPEER FAMILY DID TELEMEDIA OUTLETS THEY WANT THE MONEY GIVEN TO OMAR KHADR. LEGAL EXPERTS SAID THAT WILL BE AN UPHILL BATTLE. CATHERINE CULLEN, CBC NEWS, OTTAWA.>>Rosemary: STEVEN HARPER ISSUED A STATEMENT TONIGHT, THE FORMER PRIME MINISTER CHARACTERIZED THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT’S DECISION AS A SECRET DEAL WITH OMAR KHADR AND SAYS IT IS SIMPLY WRONG. THE KHADR STORY HAS BEEN 15 YEARS IN THE MAKING. HERE IS A LOOK BACK AT HOW IT UNFOLDED. IN A 2002 FIRE FIGHT, THE U.S. ARMY MEDIC CHRISTOPHER SPEER WAS STRUCK BY A HAND GRENADE AND KILLED. THE 15-YEAR-OLD WAS ACCUSED OF HIS MURDER AND DETAINED. THE R.C.M.P. AND CSIS INVESTIGATORS INTERVIEWED KHADR AND SHARED THE RESULTS WITH U.S. OFFICIALS. KHADR SAID HE WAS THREATENED WITH RAPE AND VIOLENCE. AND SUBJECTED TO SLEEP DEPRIVATION. IN 2010, THE SUPREME COURT OF CANADA FOUND KHADR’S CHARTER RIGHTS HAD BEEN BREACHED. LATER THAT YEAR, HE PLEADED GUILTY AND RECEIVED AN 8 YEAR SENTENCE WITH A PROMISE THAT SOME WOULD BE SERVED IN CANADA. IN 2012, KHADR IS REPATRIATED. TWO YEARS LATER, THE FEDERAL COURT ALLOWED HIM TO SUE CANADA FOR CONSPIREING WITH THE U.S. IN 2015, HE IS GRANTED BAIL WHILE HE APPEALS.>>>I SPOKE WITH OMAR KHADR BEFORE THE SETTLEMENT WAS ANNOUNCED. HERE NOW IS OUR FULL CONVERSATION.>>HOW ARE YOU DOING?>>Interview: I AM DOING OKAY. OKAY. I AM DOING OKAY. IT IS CRAZY.>>Reporter: WHAT IS CRAZY?>>ALL THE MEDIA GOING ON. THE INFORMATION REGARDING THE APOLOGY.>>Reporter: LET ME ASK YOU ABOUT THE APOLOGY, WHY DOES THAT MATTER TO YOU?>>Interview: I THINK IT RESTORES A LITTLE BIT MY REPUTATION HERE IN CANADA. AND I THINK THAT IS THE BIGGEST THING FOR ME. I NEVER WAS ANGRY OR UPSET ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED. IT HAS BEEN HARD, YOU KNOW, FINDING JOBS OR GOING TO SCHOOL AND STUFF WITH MY PAST REPUTATION. THIS WILL HELP ME MOVE FORWARD.>>Reporter: DO YOU THINK IT WILL MAKE PEOPLE FORGET WHAT YOU DID?>>NO. NOT FORGET. BUT MAYBE IT WOULD HELP PEOPLE THINK THAT MAYBE THERE IS MORE TO WHAT HAPPENED AND MAYBE LOOK MORE INTO IT AND UNDERSTAND MORE OF WHAT HAPPENED.>>Reporter: YOU SAID IT HAS BEEN HARD BECAUSE OF YOUR REPUTATION. CAN YOU GIVE ME AN EXAMPLE. LIKE WHAT KIND OF THING THAT HAPPENED?>>A COUPLE OF TIMES I APPLIED FOR A JOB AND PEOPLE SAY, YES, YES AND THEN THEY COME BACK AND THEY DON’T WANT TO DO IT FOR NO GOOD REASON. PEOPLE ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH YOUR PAST, THEY SAID. I UNDERSTAND. PEOPLE’S LIVELIHOOD. BUT I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD WITHOUT HAVING THAT.>>Reporter: WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THEM? WHEN YOU DID YOUR PRESS CONFERENCE, A COUPLE OF YEARS BACK NOW, YOU SAID I HOPE GIVE ME A CHANCE. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THE PEOPLE WHO ARE — THEY STILL DON’T BELIEVE YOU OR STILL DON’T WANT TO GIVE YOU A CHANCE?>>THEY GIVE ME A CHANCE. I HAVEN’T HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE. I UNDERSTAND CERTAIN BUSINESSES HAVE A CERTAIN REPUTATION TO HOLD. I CAN’T EXPECT EVERYBODY TO OFFER ME EVERYTHING. IT IS UNDERSTANDABLE. I WANTED TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR THEM WITH THE APOLOGY TO CONSIDER HIRING ME.>>HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT CHANGING YOUR NAME?>>NO. I HAVE THE SAME FACE. IT DOESN’T REALLY MATTER.>>WHAT ABOUT THE REPORTS OF A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY?>>I CAN’T TALK ABOUT THAT. I CAN’T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THAT. ONE WAY OR THE OTHER. IT IS AN AGREEMENT I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT.>>Reporter: WHAT DO YOU SAY TO PEOPLE WHO SAY YOU DON’T DESERVE THE MONEY?>>I CAN’T SAY IF THERE IS OR ISN’T. THIS IS NOT A TIME FOR CELEBRATION. THIS IS A TIME FOR RECONCILIATION. REMEMBRANCE, HEALING. AND I REALLY HOPE THAT THE TALK OF SETTLEMENT OR THE APOLOGY DOES NOT CAUSE PEOPLE PAIN, IF IT DOES, I AM REALLY SORRY FOR THAT PAIN.>>Reporter: YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT THE SPEER FAMILY WHO ARE OUT THERE PUBLICLY SAYING YOU DON’T DESERVE MONEY OR THEY SHOULD HAVE THE MONEY IF THERE IS MONEY.>>I AM REALLY SORRY. THIS IS NOT MY INTENTION. THIS IS A TIME FOR, YOU KNOW, RECONCILIATION AND HOPEFULLY NOT FORGETTING BUT MOVING ON AND HEALING.>>DO YOU HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING HOW DIVISIVE YOU ARE IN CANADA OF HOW PEOPLE HAVE, YOU KNOW, THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE WHO THINK YOU ARE A CHILD SOLDIER. SOME PEOPLE THINK YOU ARE A TERRORIST. DO YOU GET THAT?>>I DO. I DO. PEOPLE, IT IS A FREE COUNTRY. PEOPLE ARE ENTITLED TO MAKE THEIR OWN OPINIONS. VOICE THEIR OWN OPINIONS.>>Reporter: WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THEM ABOUT THAT, EITHER OF THOSE?>>LISTEN, I AM THERE TO CHANGE PEOPLE’S OPINIONS. I AM WHO I AM. ALL I ASK IS THAT I AM — TO MAKE AN INFORMED OPINION ABOUT ME. IT IS EASY TO JUST BELIEVE WHAT IS SAID ABOUT ME. TAKE THE TIME AND GET TO KNOW ME PERSONALLY. AND THEN, WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE, WHATEVER OPINION YOU WANT TO MAKE OF ME, I RESPECT THAT.>>Reporter: DO YOU HAVE CONTACT WITH YOUR FAMILY?>>A LITTLE BIT.>>Reporter: WHAT IS THAT CONTACT LIKE. I IMAGINE YOU ARE DIFFERENT NOW?>>I AM. I AM VERY DIFFERENT. IT IS TOUGH SOMETIMES. IT IS FAMILY, YOU KNOW.>>Reporter: YOU FEEL IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMAIN IN CONTACT WITH THEM?>>OF COURSE. YOU DON’T CHOOSE YOUR FAMILY. SOMETIMES, MAYBE IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE A GOOD INFLUENCE ON THEM. EVERYBODY IS WORRIED THEY WILL HAVE A BAD INFLUENCE ON ME. BUT MAYBE THAT’S MY CONTRIBUTION.>>Rosemary: WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE TEENAGER YOU WERE, WHEN ALL THIS HAPPENED, AND I KNOW YOU HAVE — I KNOW YOUR MEMORIES ARE NOT GREAT FROM THAT PERIOD. DOES IT FEEL LIKE A DIFFERENT PERSON? DO YOU REMEMBER BEING THAT PERSON? DOING THOSE THINGS?>>I DO. WHEN YOU ARE YOUNG, YOU DON’T THINK ABOUT THE MORALITY OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING. OR WHY YOU ARE DOING IT. YOU GROW UP IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE THESE THINGS ARE NORMAL, YOU JUST DO THEM. YOU DON’T THINK ABOUT THE MORALITY. YOU DON’T THINK ABOUT THE RIGHT AND THE WRONG. YOU DO WHATEVER. WHAT EVERYBODY ELSE AROUND YOU IS DOING. I AM A DIFFERENT PERSON. BUT I THINK BEING THE YOUNG PERSON I WAS, I COULD HAVE BEEN EASILY INFLUENCED WITH ANY SURROUNDING I WAS IN. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT I WAS IN THIS PARTICULAR — >>Rosemary: YOU ARE NOT ANGRY ABOUT THAT PART, YOU WERE PUT IN THAT POSITION?>>ANGRY IS NOT GOING TO CHANGE ANYTHING. YEARS PAST, ANGRY CAN BRING BACK FEARS AND EXPERIENCES. IT DOESN’T BRING BACK ANYTHING. RIGHT NOW, I AM TRYING TO FOCUS ON THE FUTURE. AND TRYING TO FOCUS ON THINGS THAT I CAN HAVE INFLUENCE AND CHANGE.>>Rosemary: DO YOU FEEL YOU DESERVE AN APOLOGY AND/OR MONEY?>>I DON’T THINK IT IS A MATTER OF DESERVING. SOMETIMES, IT IS THE THING WE CAN DO TO BETTER THE CHANCES FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE — TO BE ABLE TO MOVE FORWARD.>>Rosemary: WHO YOU ARE NOW? WHAT KIND OF GUY ARE YOU? WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?>>I AM A STUDENT. I AM HOPING TO GO INTO NURSING IN SEPTEMBER.>>Rosemary: WHY NURSING?>>I WANTED TO DO SOMETHING IN THE MEDICAL FIELD. I STARTED PARAMEDICS AND THAT DIDN’T WORK VERY WELL. SO I WANT TO INTERACT WITH PEOPLE AND HELP PEOPLE. I DON’T WANT TO FEEL I AM A BURDEN AND I DON’T WANT TO FEEL THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO HELP ME OR THAT I’M LIVING ON PEOPLE’S SHOULDERS. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO SAY, YOU KNOW, I CAN BE SOMEBODY ON MY OWN. I CAN EDUCATE MYSELF. I CAN, YOU KNOW, FIND A JOB. PROVIDE SOMETHING. BE SOMEBODY. NOT BECAUSE OF MY PAST, BUT BECAUSE OF WHAT I CHOOSE RIGHT NOW.>>Rosemary: WHAT KIND OF THINGS DO YOU LIKE TO DO?>>I AM AN OUTDOOR GUY. I LIKE HIKING. AND I DO — WHEN IN EDMONTON, I DID A LOT OF VOLUNTEERING. THAT KEEPS MY BUSY. AND I LIKE HELPING PEOPLE.>>Rosemary: THE ONE THING I HAVE BEEN WONDERING FOR A LONG TIME. DO YOU SLEEP OKAY? DO YOU SLEEP? DO YOU HAVE STUFF STILL THAT IS HAPPENING IN THERE?>>I DO SLEEP. I DO GET NIGHTMARES. I THINK THE HARDEST PART RIGHT NOW IS JUST BEING OVERWHELMED. LIKE BEING IN PRISON I TAUGHT MYSELF NOT TO FEEL AND KIND OF JUST SUPPRESS MY FEELINGS. WHEN THERE ARE TOO MANY THINGS THAT ARE HARD OR TOO EMOTIONAL, I SUPPRESS IT AND THAT KIND OF COMES INTO SLEEP. I AM ALWAYS TRYING TO DISTRACT MYSELF.>>Rosemary: WHAT DO YOU SAY TO CANADIANS WHO DON’T BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE A GOOD GUY? JUST DON’T BELIEVE YOU COULD CHANGE LIKE THIS?>>THEY ARE ENTITLED TO HAVE THEIR OPINION. I HAVE NO ILL FEELINGS FOR ANYBODY DOESN’T LIKE ME OR DOESN’T THINK WELL OF ME. I TELL THEM — I TELL THEM IT IS EASY TO MAKE A CONCLUSION ABOUT SOMEBODY WITHOUT KNOWING THEM. YOU KNOW. CANADA IS AN INTELLIGENT COUNTRY. PEOPLE IN CANADA ARE INTELLIGENT PEOPLE. YOU ALWAYS TOOK THE RIGHT WAY OUT. DO THE RIGHT THING, TAKE THE TIME. MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION AND THEN, YOU KNOW, I RESPECT YOUR OPINION.>>Rosemary: THANK YOU, I APPRECIATE YOUR TIME VERY MUCH. THANK YOU.>>>A SCARY SITUATION IS UNFOLDING IN B.C. TONIGHT. SEVERAL WILDFIRES ARE BURNING OUT OF CONTROL. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TOLD TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES AND NOW, LIGHTNING IS MAKING THE SITUATION WORSE.>>A RIDGELINE OF FIRE.>>Rosemary: THE LARGEST FIRE IS NEAR 100 MILE HOUSE. 200 KILOMETRES NORTHWEST OF KAMLOOPS. IT EXPLODED IN SIZE THIS AFTERNOON. TO 15 SQUARE KILOMETRES. 120 FIREFIGHTERS, 6 HELICOPTERS AND SEVERAL AIR TANKERS HAVE BEEN BROUGHT IN TO FIGHT THE FLAMES. LET’S BRING IN OUR CBC METEOROLOGIST. JOHANNA, WHAT ARE YOU KEEPING AN EYE ON TONIGHT.>>THIS SITUATION IS EXPLODING RAPIDLY TONIGHT BECAUSE OF LIGHTNING AND GUSTY WINDS. ASHCROFT IS A FIRE WE ARE WATCHING VERY CLOSELY. OVER 2500 PEOPLE EVACUATED IN THAT AREA. 100 MILEHOUSE IS BURNING OUT OF CONTROL AND GROWING IN SIZE OVER THE NEXT HOURS. CARIBOO CENTRE SAID THEY ARE REPORTING FIRES GROWING FASTER. THAN THEY CAN WRITE THEM DOWN BECAUSE OF THE LIGHTENING STRIKES. THEY ARE COMING WITH VERY GUSTY WINDS AND LITTLE RAIN. AND WITH THE HOT AND DRY TEMPERATURES IN PLACE, THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS ARE GOING TO BE CRUCIAL ACROSS THE PROVINCE. WE ARE LOOKING AT A BREAK OVERNIGHT. RIGHT NOW, WE ARE IN THE 30, 30, 30 RULE. WINDS AND TEMPERATURES GREATER THAN 30, HUMIDITY LESS. THINGS ARE GOING TO GET WORSE BEFORE THEY GET BETTER TONIGHT.>>Rosemary: THANK YOU. WE WILL KEEP OUR EYES ON IT AS WILL YOU.>>>STRAIGHT AHEAD, FOR MONTHS THEY HAVE BEEN LINKED BY SUSPICION AND SPECULATION. NOW, PRESIDENT TRUMP AND PUTIN MEET IN THE FLESH. [theme music] Fidel Castro, seen here with
his brother, Raul, has been a focal point of
controversy ever since his [Spanish word],
his bearded gorillas overthrew the Batista regime
on New Years Day this year. His executions
of former enemies, his gentle handling
of communists, his land-reform program
involving expropriation of large United States interests. All these things have kept
him in the headlines. He was interviewed in Havana by
CBC reporter, Michael Maclear. Like in Canada,
we find support too. In the public
opinion. Reporter:
Last year, by far the sharpest thorn in
the American side was Cuba. Raul Castro,
the Minister of Defence, one of the most bitter enemies
of the United States, his hatred of
all things American surpassed only by that
of his brother, Fidel. [horn] Reporter: Do you think that
Canada should continue to trade with Cuba despite
the United States embargo on trade with
that country? I don’t think we should let
the United States decision not to trade with Cuba,
to influence us. I think we have to stick
to United States policy. I am personally against
any trade with Cuba. Pierre Trudeau was
the first leader of the Western industrial
nation to step on Cuban soil. To be greeted with a warm
and friendly double handshake by Fidel Castro. It was Castro who came out
of the mountains, leading a revolution that
started turning Cuba into communist state in 1959. At a quick news conference
Trudeau was asked if he was concerned about
the people back home who were shocked by his
presence in a communist state. Well, the category of people
which would be shocked by that have long since been
shocked by my visit to China and to the Soviet Union. So, I guess I can’t
worry about that. Reporter:
The Prime Minister arrived, Fidel Castro was there
to great him with a tirade
about the United States. [speaking in Spanish] Reporter: Castro said the
blockade is [Spanish word]. He said it’s
genocide. The Prime Minister made no
direct response to him In his brief remarks he talked
of a new awareness in Cuba. An expression of confidence
in the increasing openness of Cuba to
the wider world. Reporter: Most of these people
couldn’t tell you the name of the Canadian
Prime Minister, but they know
about Canada. Canada figures high up
in their hopes. [♪♪♪]>>Rosemary: TODAY HAMBURG, GERMANY IS IN A WAY TWO CITIES YOU SAW, ONE A POLISHED SHIMMERING CITADEL OF CULTURE PLAYING HOST TO THE GLOBAL ELITE. THE OTHER A HECTIC MAZE OF PROTEST. MUCH OF IT PEACEFUL. SOME OF IT VIOLENT. PROTESTERS HAVE TITLED THEIR G-20 “WELCOME TO HELL.” THE STREETS HAVE BEEN FILLED WITH FIRE, CHAOS AND CONFRONTATION. AND DOZENS OF POLICE AND PROTESTERS WERE INJURED. MARGARET EVANS WAS ON THOSE STREETS.>>Reporter: THE CITY UNDER SIEGE. HUMBURG PLAYING HOST TO THE G-20 LEADERS AND TO THE LEGIONS RAGING AGAINST THEIR PRESENCE HERE. THE POLICE WERE ALREADY BRACING THEMSELVES FOR A HARD DAY. WITH ANARCHISTS CALLING THEMSELF THE BLACK BLOCK. LATE LAST NIGHT AND INTO THE EARLY HOURS OF THIS MORNING. CARS WERE SET ALIGHT AND WINDOWS SMASHED AND WAR CANNONS WERE AT WORK EARLY THIS MORNING. GREAT GUSHING TOREENTS, TRYING TO STOP THE MOST DETERMINED TO BLOCK THE STREETS. THE ENTIRE CITY CENTER HAS BEEN CLOSED TO REGULAR TRAFFIC. SHOPS AND BUSINESSES SHUTTERED. LEAVING THE STREETS FREE FOR THE FAMILIAR CAME OF CAT AND MOUSE BETWEEN POLICE AND PROTESTERS. SOME IN THE CROWDS CLEARLY DRESSED FOR TROUBLE. AND NO FANS OF THE MEDIA. 15,000 POLICEMEN HERE IN THE CENTER OF HAMBURG TRYING TO KEEP THE PROTESTERS AWAY FROM THAT MEETING. WE HEARD THEY HAD TO CALL IN REINFORCEMENTS. MOST OF THE DEMONSTRATORS HAVE NO WISH TO CLASH WITH THE POLICE. JUST TO VOICE THEIR OPPOSITION TO WHAT THEY BELIEVE THE G-20 STANDS FOR.>>THEY ARE NOT THE SOLUTION. THEY ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM. AND WHATEVER THEY TALK, WHATEVER THEY DECIDE, IT IS NOT FOR THE PEOPLE. IT IS ONLY FOR THEMSELVES.>>WE ARE HERE TO TELL THE WORLD WE DON’T LIKE THIS KIND OF MEETING.>>Reporter: IT CAUSED NO SMALL DISRUPTION FOR HAMBURG RESIDENTS. THE POLICE LOCKING DOWN DOZENS OF CITY BLOCKS WITH PROTESTERS GETTING AWAY ON THEM. THE SHOE MAKER IS STUCK.>>Interview: I DID NOT EXPECT THAT IT WOULD BE THAT AWFUL. BUT IN FACT, NOBODY IS — AT THE MOMENT, WE CANNOT GET OUT. AND NOBODY CAN GET IN.>>Reporter: AS THE SUN WENT DOWN, THERE WAS MORE VIOLENCE IN SOME PARTS OF THE CITY. WITH FIRES ON THE STREETS. REPORTS OF LOOTING. ALL THAT AND THE SUMMIT STILL HAS ONE MORE DAY TO GO. MARGARET EVANS, CBC NEWS, HAMBURG.>>Rosemary: INSIDE THE SECURITY CORDON, THE G-20 IS A PLACE OF HIGH POWER DIPLOMACY, TWO LEADERS TODAY WERE AT CENTER STAGE, DONALD TRUMP AND VLADIMIR PUTIN. THE U.S. INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES SAID PUTIN AUTHORIZED AN ATTACK ON THE U.S. ELECTION TO HELP TRUMP WIN. TODAY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN TRUMP’S PRESIDENCY, THEY MET FACE-TO-FACE. DID IT DEFY EXPECTATIONS, CONFIRM SUSPICIONS?>>Reporter: THEIR BODY LANGUAGE HEADING INTO THEIR MEETING, FRIENDLY ENOUGH, NOT OVERLY SO. THE TALK WAS SCHEDULED FOR JUST 35 MINUTES. BUT WENT ON FOR MORE THAN TWO HOURS. REX TILLERSON, THE U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE WAS IN THE ROOM. AND SAID THERE WAS A VERY POSITIVE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN THE TWO. TILLERSON TOLD REPORTERS IN AN AUDIO ONLY BRIEFING THAT TRUMP STARTED OFF RAISING THE ISSUE OF ELECTION MEDDLING.>>THE PRESIDENT PRESSED PRESIDENT PUTIN ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION REGARDING RUSSIAN INVOLVEMENT, THE PRESIDENT DENIED SUCH INVOLVEMENT AS I THINK HE HAS IN THE PAST.>>Reporter: TILLERSON SAID THEY AGREED TO MOVE ON.>>IT IS A LITTLE TOO EARLY TO CAST IT AS A SUCCESS. I BELIEVE PRESIDENT TRUMP DID THE RIGHT THING BY RAISING THE ELECTION ISSUE IT PUTIN.>>Reporter: HOWEVER IN A SEPARATE BRIEFING, THE RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTER LAVROV SAID TRUMP ACCEPTED PUTIN’S DENIAL THAT HE HAD NOT INTERFERED IN THE U.S. ELECTION. TONIGHT, THE WHITE HOUSE IS DISPUTING THAT. THEY DID COME TO AN AGREEMENT ON SYRIA. RUSSIA, THE U.S. AND JORDAN WILL ENTER INTO A CEASE-FIRE IN THE COUNTRY’S SOUTHWEST. BOTH THE U.S. AND RUSSIA HAVE TROOPS ON THE GROUND. THE U.S. HAS BACKED ANTI-GOVERNMENT FORCES FIGHTING THERE. AND RUSSIA HAS BEEN A STAUNCH SUPPORTERS OF BASHAR al-ASSAD. THE POSITION REMAINS THAT ASSAD AND HIS FAMILY MUST GO. BOTH AGREE ON THE NEED TO ROLL BACK NORTH KOREA’S NUCLEAR PROGRAM. THEY DIFFER ON HOW. THE LONG-AWAITED MEETING BETWEEN THE TWO SWAGERING WORLD LEADERS IS OVER. SO DID THEY GET ALONG, WILL THEY BE FRIENDS OR FOES OR BOTH? WE DO KNOW THAT THEY HAD A LOT TO TALK ABOUT. IN FACT, AT ONE POINT, MELANIA TRUMP WENT IN TO WRAP THINGS UP, BUT TRUMP AND PUTIN WENT ON TALKING FOR ANOTHER FULL HOUR.>>Rosemary: TRUMP IS ON THE MIND OF OTHER LEADERS AT THE SUMMIT. SPECIFICALLY HOW TO GET HIM ONBOARD. PART OF THE AMERICA FIRST BRAND, IS TO REJECT INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS ON TRADE AND CLIMATE CHANGE, AND AS KATIE SIMPSON EXPLAINS, THAT PUTS THE G-20 ON A PATH OF COLLISION.>>Reporter: THESE ARE LEADERS DEEPLY DIVIDED. THEY PUT THE TENSIONS ASIDE FOR AN EVENING OF MUSIC. A LAST MOMENT TO REFLECT BEFORE FINALIZING WHAT EXPERTS FEAR COULD BECOME A WATERED DOWN PLEDGE OF SUPPORT FOR THE TRADITIONAL WORLD ORDER.>>I THINK THEY WILL DRAW FROM THE COMMUNIQUE HEROIC PASSAGES ON THE BIG DIVISIVE ISSUES.>>Reporter: THE HOST ANGELA MERKEL OPENED THE G-20 CALLING FOR UNITY. A PLEA AIMED AT DONALD TRUMP WITHOUT USING HIS NAME.>>CANADA WAS QUICK TO DOWNPLAY HOPE OF CONSENSUS ON THE KEY ISSUE OF CLIMATE CHANGE.>>ALL OF US GOING INTO THE SUMMIT MEETING, THE U.S. POSITION WAS DIFFERENT. THE U.S. TO THEIR CREDIT HAVE BEEN VERY CLEAR ABOUT THEIR POSITION.>>Reporter: DONALD TRUMP STANDS APART FROM OTHER LEADERS AFTER PULLING THE U.S. OUT OF THE PARIS CLIMATE ACCORD. THE REST OF THE ROOM MUST NOW DECIDE WHAT IT WILL COMMIT TO.>>THERE IS A RISK, THEY TRY AND TRY TO GET SOMETHING EVERYBODY WILL AGREE WITH, YOU COULD GO BACKWARD. THERE IS A RISK. WE COULD END UP WITH A FAILURE HERE.>>Reporter: THE PRIME MINISTER MET WITH THE NEW FRENCH PRESIDENT MACRON TO DISCUSS CLIMATE CHANGE. AND HE HELD A SIMILAR PRIVATE COMMUNICATION WITH THE GERMAN CHANCELLOR. THEY TALKED TRADE, THE MORE PROTECTIONIST TRUMP ADMINISTRATION IS IN A DIFFERENT CAMP. TRUDEAU IS PUSHING FOR CONSENSUS ON ANOTHER CONCERN THAT DIVIDED CANADIANS. HE IS URGING OTHER LEADERS TO STOP PAYING RANSOM FOR HOSTAGES TO TERROR GROUPS. THE POLICY BECAME A PRIORITY FOR TRUDEAU BECAUSE OF THE KIDNAPPING OF CANADIANS JOHN RIDSEL AND ROBERT HALL IN THE PHILIPPINES. THEY WERE KILLED BY MILITANTS LAST YEAR. INDIA’S PRIME MINISTER WHO MET WITH TRUDEAU TODAY, SUPPORTS THE IDEA AND COMMITMENTS TO DISCUSS IT ARE ALREADY IN THE PRELIMINARY VERSION OF THE FINAL G-20 STATEMENT. CANADA’S FOREIGN MINISTER DOWNPLAYED THE IDEA THAT TRUDEAU IS ACTING AS AN INTERMEDIARY BETWEEN TRUMP AND THE EUROPEAN LEADERS. CHRYSTIA FREELAND SAID THE EUROPEAN DIPLOMATS ARE EFFECTIVE IN THEIR OWN RIGHTS. A TEST OF THEIR INFLUENCE MAY BE CLEARER TOMORROW WHEN THE FINAL COMMUNIQUE IS RELEASE DOLLARS. — RELEASED.>>Rosemary: MORE THAN 7 DECADES SINCE NUCLEAR WEAPONS WERE UNLEASHED ON THE WORLD, 122 NATIONS HAVE AGREED TO BAN THEM. THE LEGALLY BINDING TREATY WAS SIGNED TODAY. THE NINE COUNTRIES THAT HAVE OR BELIEVED TO HAVE NUCLEAR WEAPONS DID NOT SIGN ON. NOR DID CANADA. DUE TO ITS NATO COMMITMENT.>>>THOUSANDS OF TURKS UNHAPPY WITH THE HARD LINE GOVERNMENT OF PRESIDENT ERDOGAN HIT THE ROAD FOR DEMOCRACY, THE LONG ROAD. THEY ARE WALKING FROM ANKARA TO ISTANBUL. A MARCH FOR JUSTICE.>>Reporter: THEIR DESTINATION IS ISTANBUL. THEIR DEMAND, JUSTICE AND DEMOCRACY FOR ALL. AND NOT JUST THOSE WHO SUPPORT TURKEY’S PRESIDENT ERDOGAN. EVEN IF EVERY STEP IS DIFFICULT. I AM HERE FOR PEACE, SHE SAID. FOR OUR CHILDREN. THE CHIEF RIVAL, THE LEADER OF THE CHP IS THE MAN BEHIND THE MOVEMENT. AT 69, HE HAS WALKED AS MANY AS 20 KILOMETRES A DAY. DURING A HEAT WAVE TO MAKE HIS POINT. WE SAT DOWN WITH HIM IN HIS TRAILER DURING A SHORT BREAK ON THE ROAD.>>HE SAID THE JAILING OF ONE OF HIS OWN M.P.S WAS THE BREAKING POINT. WHATEVER RIGHTS ARE GIVEN TO PEOPLE IN CANADA, HE SAID, FREEDOM OF THOUGHT, FREEDOM OF PRESS, EQUALITY OF MEN AND WOMEN, WE SHOULD HAVE IT TOO. HE SEES SUCCESS IN THE SIZE OF THE CROWD, THE MIX OF PEOPLE IN IT. INCLUDING THOSE WHO DON’T NORMALLY SUPPORT HIS PARTY. 23 DAYS IN, THE FEELING IS STILL. ANGRY VOICES TOO. THIS CROWD IS CHANTING FOR JUSTICE, FOR LEGAL RIGHTS, FOR RULE OF LAW. THE OPPOSING VOICE IS CHANTING FOR ERDOGAN. IT IS ADVISED POLITICS VERSUS ONE THAT IS BASED ON PRINCIPLE.>>Reporter: IT MAY SEEM THE PROTEST HAS BEEN ALLOWED TO CONTINUE FOR SO LONG AND HUNDREDS OF RIOT OFFICERS ARE PROTECTING MARCHERS AS MUCH AS POLICING THEM. TURKEY IS STILL UNDER A STATE OF EMERGENCY. AFTER LAST SUMMER’S DEADLY ATTEMPTED COUPE. AND TENS OF THOUSANDS HAVE BEEN ROUNDED UP AND FIRED AND DETAINED IN AN AUTHORITARIAN ENVIRONMENT. ALLOWING THE PROTEST MARCH, THE PROTESTOR FIGURES, IS ERDOGAN’S POLITICAL SAVVY AT PLAY.>>THE PRESIDENT FEELS IT IF SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS IN THIS ATMOSPHERE, MAYBE IT WILL AFFECT HIM IN A VERY NEGATIVE WAY. SO HE PROTECTS HIMSELF.>>Reporter: THEY WILL KEEP MARCHING FOR TWO MORE DAYS BEFORE A RALLY IN ISTANBUL ON SUNDAY.>>Rosemary: UP NEXT, THE RISE OF ELECTRIC CARS.>>NOW YOU ARE SEEING EVERY AUTO MAKER WITH ONE, TWO, FIVE VEHICLES.>>Rosemary: THEY HAVE BEEN QUIETLY GAINING GROUND. WHY IT LOOKS LIKE A TURNING POINT.>>GLOBAL INVESTORS ARE INTERESTED IN CANADA’S CLIMATE POLICY AND CANADA’S COMMITMENT TO CLIMATE ACTION.>>Rosemary: CANADA HAS A NEW CLIMATE CHANGE AMBASSADOR. WHAT EXACTLY DOES SHE DO?>>THE DAYS BUSINESS NUMBERS, THE TSX FELL NEARLY 60 POINTS. THE DOLLAR ROSE BY A THIRD OF A CENT. IN NEW YORK, THE DOW GAINED 94 POINTS. THE PRICE OF OIL FELL MORE THAN A DOLLAR. A rapidly increasing number
of experts and politicians are becoming
progressively alarmed about air pollution. Most of the damage
is caused by car, pollution coming
from the exhaust, and a bill has just been
introduced into congress for a federal study
of electric cars. The car uses
no gas or oil, needs almost no maintenance, and
creates no pollution or noise. Speed is a problem,
though, where the car can only get up to
40 or 50 miles an hour. Reporter:
It doesn’t look like much, but under its homemade
plywood body is an efficient zinc air battery
powered electric motor. In its present
experimental form, the car has a top speed
of 73 miles per hour and a cruising range
of more than 300 miles. It takes eight hours
to recharge the battery from an ordinary
household electrical outlet. The owner is
61-year-old Bill Ward. I asked him if he’s had any
approaches from manufacturers. Not genuine approaches, no. General Motors says
it has made a breakthrough in the development
of batteries to power the electric car
of the future. Zinc nickel oxide batteries
drive the car for 160 kilometres before
they need recharging; that’s twice as far as
conventional battery power. The motorist simply plugs
his car in overnight to build the power
back up again. This type of electric car
gets a top speed of 80 kilometres an hour,
and would cost about the same as a standard
sub-compact model. Reporter: It may look like
an ordinary Chrysler van on the outside, but it’s a very
different van on the inside. It uses an electrically powered
sodium sulphur battery. The electric van
was unveiled last week at Expo in Vancouver. Powerplex calculates that
electricity for its battery costs about one and
a half cents a kilometre, compared to five and a half
cents for gasoline. It’s becoming almost a ritual in
the automotive industry now: a car company puts on
a big PR show for its new electric car,
everyone says how wonderful electric cars are,
and then they tell you that you can’t buy one,
even if you wanted to– because it just doesn’t
make economic sense. Experts say improvements
in technology will eventually make
electric cars practical, but it’s slow going;
just like Vancouver traffic. Reporter: There’s gold fever on
the streets of St. Paul. Everyone’s talking
about Bre X, a small Calgary mining company
that struck gold half a world away. And even though the mines
are in Indonesia, a lot of the wealth
is right here in St. Paul. Do you know any
new millionaires? A few. Reporter: Traders at
the Alberta Stock Exchange say they’ve never seen
anything like it. From a low of $1.90 to a high
of $170 in just one year. Reporter: Just five weeks ago,
Bre X’s exploration chief predicted the mine could
yield up to 200 million ounces of gold;
but last week, the first signs
of potential trouble. Bre X geologist Michael de
Guzman fell from a helicopter on a flight
to the mining site. Some say
it was suicide. Now, the Indonesian government
has put the project on hold after Bre X revealed yesterday
the size of the find may have been overstated. Wholesale panic today
over the Bre X affair. Canadians dumped
the gold company’s stock as fast as they could. Share prices crashed,
and Bre X struggled in vain to stop the damage. All this after word
the company’s supposedly gigantic gold strike
could be worthless. Reporter: Security guards have
been patrolling the building since early last night,
when the company released the independent audit
by Strathcona Minerals calling Bre X
the largest fraud in international
mining history. Bre X employees
continued to work even as the world speculated
about how such a massive salting scheme
could have been carried out. The Wall Street Journal
ran a front page story talking about
a secret storage site where workers
added mysterious powders to already crushed rock
before sending it on to the labs. These are pictures
of that alleged site. The sign says, “If you have
no business here, go away.” Around 400 million in market
capitalization has been lost in the first
four minutes of trading. That money is gone. [♪♪♪] A REMOTE QUEBEC FIRST NATION IS IN SHOCK FOLLOWING A BRUTAL INCIDENT IN A PARK. TWO PRESCHOOLERS AGED 3 AND 5 WERE BADLY BEATEN BY A GROUP OF OTHER YOUNG CHILDREN. IT HAPPENED TUESDAY. A SMALL COMMUNITY ABOUT 250 KILOMETRES NORTH OF MONTREAL. THE CBC HAS MORE.>>Reporter: THE COMMUNITY IS TRYING TO UNDERSTAND HOW YOUNG CHILDREN COULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCH BRUTAL VIOLENCE. TWO YOUNG BOYS AGED 5 AND 3 WERE PLAYING OUTSIDE. THERE WAS SOME SORT OF ALTERCATION WITH A GROUP OF THREE OTHER CHILDREN. ALL UNDER THE AGE OF 10. AT SOME POINT THINGS TURNED VIOLENT. THE BROTHERS WERE BADLY BEATEN. THE YOUNGEST WAS FORCED TO SWALLOW SAND. IT SHOWS US THAT EVERYTHING ADULTS ARE GOING THROUGH, IT HAS BEEN IMPACT ON OUR CHILDREN. THE BAND COUNCILLOR SAID AND ADDS THAT IS WHAT AFFECTED ME THE MOST. THAT IS WHAT GETS ME IN ALL OF THIS. THE OLDER BOY HAS BEEN RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL. HIS YOUNGER BROTHER HAD TO UNDERGO A PROCEDURE TO REMOVE THE SAND FROM HIS AIRWAYS. HE IS EXPECTED TO BE RELEASED NEXT WEEK. THE GRAND CHIEF SAID THE INCIDENT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.>>Interview: OF COURSE IT IS SOMETHING TRAUMATIZING FOR BOTH PARENTS AND EVEN FOR THE COMMUNITY.
