Safe Haven for Rescued Pets

ROB MCCLENDON: WELL JUST
HOURS AFTER THE STORM THAT
DEVASTATED PARTS OF MOORE, OKLAHOMA, OKLAHOMA’S
DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
OPENED A TRIAGE CENTER FOR PETS INJURED IN THE STORM. OUR ANDY BARTH UPDATES US
ON THEIR EFFORT TO HELP
SOME OF THE MOST HELPLESS VICTIMS OF RECENT
TORNADOES. ANDY BARTH: THE TORNADOS
OF MAY 2013 RAVAGED
AMERICA’S HEARTLAND, LEAVING MANY DEAD AND
THOUSANDS HOMELESS. BUT PEOPLE AREN’T THE
ONLY ONES AFFECTED BY
THE DEVASTATING STORMS. DOGS, CATS AND OTHER
FURRY FRIENDS ARE
HOMELESS AS WELL. KRISTI SCROGGINS: WE ARE
TAKING INTAKES FROM ANIMAL
CONTROL, FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC, ANYONE THAT HAS,
THAT MAY HAVE BEEN A
TORNADO ANIMAL IS WELCOME TO COME THROUGH OUR DOORS. ANDY: KRISTI SCROGGINS
OWNS HER OWN VET CLINIC IN
MOORE, OKLAHOMA, AND IS VOLUNTEERING AT THE
DISPLACED ANIMAL SHELTER. SCROGGINS: AS THE ANIMALS
ARE COMING THROUGH OUR
DOORS, THEY’RE GETTING IDENTIFIED. THOSE IDENTIFICATIONS
ARE GETTING PUT OUT TO
THE PUBLIC THROUGH THE DEPARTMENT OF AG
AND THROUGH THE
FACEBOOK PAGES. THEY ARE, ALL OF
THEIR MEDICAL NEEDS
ARE BEING ASSESSED. EVERYBODY’S GOING THROUGH
A FULL VETERINARIAN EXAM
WHEN THEY WALK IN THE DOORS. ANDY: GRACE OWEN IS AN
EQUINE VETERINARIAN WHO
RESPONDED TO THE ORR FAMILY FARM WHICH IS
A AGRITOURISM LOCATION
THAT TOOK A DIRECT HIT FROM AN EF-5 TORNADO. GRACE OWEN: WE HAD BEEN
THERE MAYBE THIRTY MINUTES
AND ALREADY PEOPLE WERE COMING OUT TO SUPPORT US. I KNOW THAT MULTIPLE
PEOPLE WERE PASSING OUT
WATER TO PEOPLE THAT WERE FIRST RESPONDERS WITHIN
THAT THIRTY MINUTE FRAME. THERE WAS A LOT
OF TEAM WORK. MULTIPLE VETERINARIANS
RESPONDED. SO WE HAD A SYSTEM THAT
WAS ABLE TO KIND OF TAKE
INTO ACCOUNT WHAT WE NEEDED TO DO. ANDY: AND STATE
VETERINARIAN ROD HALL SAYS
NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME TO FIND YOUR PET. ROD HALL: IF YOU’VE LOST A
PET OR IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE
WHO HAS LOST A PET AND THEY HAVEN’T FOUND THEM,
PLEASE MAKE EFFORTS TO SEE
IF YOU CAN FIND YOUR PET HERE. OUR GOAL IS TO REUNITE ALL
OF THESE PETS WITH THEIR
OWNERS, AND WE’RE GETTING TO THE POINT NOW
WHERE WE JUST NEED
MORE HELP TO DO THAT. ANDY: AND SCROGGINS SAYS
LOST PETS WILL BE IN
TIP-TOP SHAPE AND READY TO SEE THEIR FAMILIES. SCROGGINS: ONCE THEY’RE
HERE EVERYBODY’S BEEN
VACCINATED, MICRO CHIPPED, DEWORMED, FLEA AND TICK
TREATED, AND THEN THEY’RE
SET UP AND READY TO BASICALLY WAIT FOR THEIR
FAMILIES TO COME AND
FIND THEM AT THAT POINT. ANDY: A MOMENT THAT
CANNOT COME SOON ENOUGH.
