Pet overpopulation 10pm 10-29-2015

LIMITED FUNDING… SMALL SPACES… AND AN OVERWHELMING NUMBER OF ANIMALS. IT’S AN EQUATION THAT’S PUTTING MANY SHELTERS IN A DIFFICULT POSITION… LEAVING SOME WITH NO OPTION OTHER THAN EUTHANIZING ANIMALS. EARLIER THIS MONTH… WE FOLLOWED THE STORY OF 11 DOGS THAT TRAVELED MORE THAN A THOUSAND MILES TO ESCAPE THE POSSIBILITY OF DEATH. THE GEORGIA SHELTER THEY WERE AT WAS KNOWN FOR HIGH EUTHANASIA RATES. SHELTER OFFICIALS SAY THEIR HAND WAS FORCED, BECAUSE THEY WERE AT CAPACITY, AND ALSO DEALING WITH A DISTEMPER OUTBREAK. THE PUPS HAVE ALL FOUND LOVING HOMES HERE IN WISCONSIN. BUT NOT ALL DOGS ARE AS FORTUNATE. NBC15’S AMY PFLUGSHAUPT DIGS INTO THE PROBLEM OF PET OVER-POPULATIONS. THE GOOD NEWS… MANY SHELTERS IN OUR AREA AREN’T FACED WITH SUCH TOUGH DECISIONS AT THIS TIME. MEANING THERE’S SOME ROOM FOR ANIMALS IN NEED. HOWEVER… IT’S A SITUATION THAT CAN GET OUT OF HAND QUICKLY. NATIONWIDE… ABOUT 7-POINT-6 MILLION ANIMALS WIND UP IN SHELTERS EVERY YEAR. ((ASPCA)) NAT BUT ONLY 2-POINT-7 MILLION GO ON TO FIND FOREVER HOMES. HERE IN OUR AREA… THOUSANDS WERE ADOPTED LAST YEAR ALONE. WHILE ADOPTION SAVES LIVES. NAT IT’S NOT ENOUGH. SOT FROM DANA – 9:27:07:15 – THERE ARE STATISTICS AROUND AND SOME OF THEM SAY THAT EVERY MAN WOMAN AND CHILD WOULD HAVE TO HAVE 8 ANIMALS TO ALL THE HOMELESS ANIMALS A HOME. THAT WOULD MEAN A FAMILY OF FOUR WOULD HAVE 32 ANIMALS. ((12 SECONDS)) THIS PUTS SHELTERS IN A TOUGH POSITION. SOT FROM DANA – 9:28:03:03 – IT’S A DELIEMMA. THERE ARE ONLY SO MANY RESOURCES – WHETHER IT’S TIME, SPACE, OR MONEY. ((6 SECONDS)) SOT FROM GAYLE – 10:22:11:14 – SOMETIMES PEOPLE CAN GET CONFUSED THAT OUR NAME “DANE COUNTY HUMANE SOCEITY” THAT WE’RE A COUNTY AGENCY. 10:22:33:20 – OVER 60% OF OUR FUNDING COMES FROM PRIVATE DONORS, ESTATES, GRANTS, THINGS LIKE THAT WITH MANY SHELTERS WITH THEIR BACKS AGAINST THE WALL… SOT FROM DANA – 9:29:29:26 – THE OPTION IS ALWAYS A POSSIBILITY OF EUTHANIZING. NOW WE’VE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE THAT WE HAVEN’T HAD TO EUTHANIZE A HEALTHY ADOPTABLE ANIMALS IN YEARS, BUT IT CERTAINLY COULD BE AN OPTION. 9:29:47:04 TO AVOID EUTHANIZING ANIMALS FOR SPACE… THERE’S AN EASY FIX SOT FROM DANA – 9:26:54:07 – THERE’S REALLY A SIMPLE ANSWER – PEOPLE AREN’T SPAYING AND NEUTRING THEIR PETS. 58:20 THAT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT ANSWER. ((7 SECONDS)) LET’S PUT THIS INTO PERSPECTIVE. ((SHOW GRAPH)) THEORETICALLY OVER FOUR YEARS… ONE UNSPAYED FEMALE, HER MALE MATE, AND THEIR LITTERS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE MORE THAN 2-THOUSAND KITTENS. OVER 8 YEARS… THAT NUMBER JUMPS TO 2 MILLION. NATS FROM THE SURGERY DR. CASEY WALTER HAS PERFORMED THOUSANDS OF THESE SURGERIES OVER THE YEARS. SHE SAYS IT’S A ROUTINE PROCEDURE… INVOLVING MINIMAL RISKS… TAKING ANYWHERE FROM THREE MINUTES FOR A MALE CAT TO 30 MINUTES FOR LARGER DOG. DR. CASEY WALTER – SHELTER VETERNARIAN – 9:49:26:05 – THE BIG THING AFTER SURGERY IS TRYING TO KEEP ANIMALS QUIET. BECAUSE USUALLY THEY FEEL PRETTY GOOD. BUT THEY SHOULD BE NOT RUNNING AND JUMPING. 39:11 NOT ONLY WILL IT CUT DOWN ON THE PET OVER POPULATION PROBLEM… IT COULD RESULT IN A HEALTHY LIFE FOR YOUR FURRY FRIEND. SOT FROM DR. WALTER – 9:21:02:14 – IF A FEMALE ANIMAL SPAY BEFORE THEY GO INTO HEAT IT ALMOST BRINGS THEIR CHANCES OF MAMMORY CANCER DOWN TO ZERO. IF COST IS AN ISSUE… MANY SHELTERS – INCLUDING THE SAUK COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY OFFER LOW-COST PROCEDURES. CATS AT JUST $40 DOLLARS… AND DOGS RANGING FROM $90 TO $110. IT’S ONE WAY TO TRY TO HELP SHELTERS ACHIEVE THE ULTIMATE GOAL… EVERY PET HAS A HOME… AND THEIR SERVICES ARE NO LONGER NEEDED. SOT FROM DANA – 9:32:27:18 – HIGH ADOPTION RATES ARE DESIRABLE. OUR ADOPTION RATES ARE INCREASING AND HAVE OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS, BUT THAT’S A BANDAID. WE STILL NEED TO CURB THE INFLUX OF ANIMALS THAT ARE COMING THROUGH THE DOORS IN THE FIRST PLACE. 9:32:38:17 TALENT:AMY FOR A LOOK AT INTAKE AND ADOPTION RATES… AS WELL AS WHAT SERVICES SHELTERS IN YOUR COMMUNITY OFFER. WE HAVE A LINK POSTED AT NBC15-DOT-COM. JUST CLICK ON THIS STORY.
