Outbreak forces Jasper Animal Shelter to euthanize 20-25 dogs

WVTM13’S JON PAEPCKE UPDATES THE
OUTLOOK FOR THE REST OF THE
SHELTER ANIMALS. JON: TWO WEEKS AGO WE INTRODUCED
YOU TO THE DISTEMPER OUTBREAK IN
WALKER COUNTY.>>[BARKING]
JON: THE HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS
DISEASE CAUSING ANIMAL SHELTERS
TO STOP ALLOWING DOGS IN OR OUT. SINCE THEN, MORE THAN TWO DOZEN
ANIMALS WHO TESTED POSITIVE AT
JASPER’S ANIMAL SHELTER HAD TO
BE EUTHANIZED.>>THAT IS PROBABLY, 20, 20 PLUS
ANIMALS AT THE PRESENT TIME. WE HAVE12 ANIMALS THAT HAVE
TESTED NEGATIVE. JON: MEANWHILE ABOUT 10 MINUTES
AWAY HERE AT THE WALKER COUNTY
HUMANE SOCIETY THE DISTEMPER
OUTBREAK HAS ALSO CAUSED THEM TO
STOP ACCEPTING ANY NEW ANIMALS. WE ARE TOLD THEY ARE TRYING TO
SAVE AS MANY AS POSSIBLE, BUT
RECENTLY THE INFECTION HAS
FORCED THEM TO PUT TWO ANIMALS
TO SLEEP. JASPER’S MAYOR SAID THE CHANCE
OF ANIMALS OVERCOMING THE
DISEASE IS SLIM.>>AND THE LIKELIHOOD THAT THE
ANIMAL WILL INFECT OTHER ANIMALS
IS HIGHLY LIKELY. YOU PUT ALL THAT TOGETHER AND
AS TOUGH A DECISION AS IT IS, IT
IS THE RIGHT DECISION. JON: ONCE THE DISTEMPER THREAT
IS ELIMINATED THE BIRMINGHAM
HUMANE SOCIETY WILL BEGIN
MANAGING JASPER’S ANIMAL
SHELTER.>>WE WANT EVERY ANIMAL THAT
HAS TO END UP AT OUR SHELTER TO
HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE
ADOPTED AND LIVE THEIR LIFE OU
UNDER FAVORABLE CONDITIONS, AND
THAT IS WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT. JON: THERE ARE PLANS TO OPEN AN
UPDATED SHELTER AT A NEW
LOCATION IN
