NTSB continues plane crash investigation


HOURS SINCE THE PLANE CARRYING NASCAR LEGEND—DALE EARNHARDT JUNIOR WENT DOWN RIGHT HERE IN EAST TENNESSEE. THE NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD ON SCENE TODAY— DESCRIBING THAT PLANE LANDING AS QUOTE FIRM AS IT ARRIVED FROM STATESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA. THE PLANE CONTINUED DOWN THE RUNWAY – THROUGH A FENCE – COMING TO A CRASHING REST ON HIGHWAY 91 IN ELIZABETHTON. THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED IN THAT CRASH—- EARNHARDT, HIS WIFE AND DAUGHTER ALL MAKING IT OUT OKAY. WJHL REPORTER JUSTIN SOTO —-HAS BEEN AT THE SCENE SINCE WE LEARNED ABOUT THE CRASH. HE HAS MORE AS INVESTIGATORS TRY TO PIECE TOGETHER EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. VO WE KNOW NOW FROM INVESTIGATORS THAT THE PLANE BOUNCED AT LEAST TWICE BEFORE COMING DOWN HARD ON THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR. THE PLANE CONTINUED DOWN THE RUNWAY – THROUGH A FENCE – DOWN A DITCH – AND CAME BACK UP BEFORE STOPPING. NTSB INVESTIGATOR RALPH HICKS SAID THE FIRE STARTED AFTER THE CRASH AND AFTER EVERYONE WAS OUT OF THE PLANE. INVESTIGATORS HAVE LOOKED OVER SURVEILLANCE VIDEO THAT CORROBORATES WHAT THE PILOTS AND EARNHARDT’S FAMILY SAID HAPPENED. AND THEN WE’RE GOING TO GO INTO THE COCKPIT THE FUSELAGE, STARTING TO CUT THE AIRPLANE UP AND DOCUMENT ALL OF THE FLIGHT CONTROLS, THE ENGINE CONTROLS, TAKING A LOOK AT ALL OF THE SYSTEMS VERY METHODICALLY.” CONTVO THE N-T-S-B SAYS WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE GOOD HERE YESTERDAY AT THE AIRPORT WITH CALM WINDS. THEY’RE CALLING THIS STAGE OF THE INVESTIGATION “FACTFINDING” – NO WORD YET ON ANY POSSIBLE HUMAN OR MECHNICAL ERROR.
