National Hurricane Center issues advisories on Tropical Storms Dorian Erin, live stream

>>AND SO I’M SECURE HERE. WITH THE POWER, THE FOOD, THE SECURITY. SO I’M LEAVING. >>MOST PEOPLE ARE STAYING. WE WENT TO FEMA TO FIND OUT HOW READY THEY ARE. >>WHAT GIVES YOU CONFIDENCE THAT YOU’RE BETTER PREPARED NOW? >>I THINK, FIRST OF ALL, THE AMOUNT OF SUPPLIES WE HAVE. >>TWO YEARS AFTER HURRICANE MARIA, 30,000 HOMES ARE STILL COVERED WITH BLUE TARPS. AND ABOUT 1,000 ROADS REMAIN IMPASSABLE AROUND THE ISLAND. >>IF YOU LOOK AROUND AT THIS WAREHOUSE, WE HAVE FIVE WHERE WE HAD ONE. THERE’S TEN TIMES THE COMMODITY ON THE ISLAND THAT WERE HERE PRE-MARIA. WE SPENT THE PAST TWO YEARS LEARNING LESSONS AND MAKING SURE WE’RE BETTER PREPARED. >>PRESIDENT TRUMP SAYS CONGRESS APPROVED AID FOR HRRICANE MARIA AFTER THE DEVASTATION. THAT’S NOT TRUE. CONGRESS ALLOCATED 33 BILLION. LESS THAN 14 BILLION OF THAT HAS GOTTEN TO THE ISLAND. >>LEARNING FROM WHAT WENT WRONG. >>THE CEO OF THE ISLAND’S POWER COMPANY SAID IF THE ENTIRE ISLAND WERE TO LOSE POWER IN A WORST CASE SCENARIO. HE PREDICTS HE COULD HAVE THE LIGHTS BACK ON IN TWO WEEKS. >>WE HAVE TO RESTORE AS QUICK AS POSSIBLE. IT’S NOT ACCEPTABLE WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME. ELEVEN WEEKS TO GET POWER BACK. IMAGINE IF IT WAS YOUR FAMILY. IT’S GOING TO BE DIFFERENT. INTO EQUITY YOU COVERED A LOT OF GROUND. YOU SPOKE WITH PEOPLE IN PUERTO RICO PLANNING TO LEAVE AHEAD OF THIS STORM. WHAT DID THEY SAY IT’S GOING TO TAKE FOR THEM TO TRUST THE GOVERNMENT CAN HANDLE A HURRICANE? >>CHRIS, I WOULD ASSUME WATCHING HOW THEY HANDLE THIS ONE. IT’S NOT A HURRICANE. BUT IT’S A TROPICAL STORM HEADED TO A VULNERABLE ISLAND WITH A WEAK POWER GRID. IF THIS STORM WERE TO HEAD TO CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, OR MIAMI, PEOPLE MIGHT SHRUG IT OFF. NOT A BIG DEAL. HERE, IT’S A WIG DEAL. I WANT TO SET THE CONTEXT. PEOPLE ARE NOT FLEEING IN ISLAND IN DROVES. A MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE AT THE AIRPORT YESTERDAY WERE LEAVING BECAUSE THEY WERE SCHEDULED TO LEAVE OR BECAUSE THE STORM WAS COMING IN AND THEY WANTED TO LEAVE EARLY. THE LADY WE INTERVIEWED WAS UNUSUAL. SHE BOUGHT A ONE WAY TICKET. SHE SAID MARIA TOOK TOO MUCH OUT OF ME. SHE SAID I DON’T WANT TO GO THROUGH A TROPICAL STORM WITH THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT HERE. I DON’T TRUST THEM. SO THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE ARE STAYING. BUT THEY’RE PREPARING. TEN DAYS WORTH OF FOOD AND WATER. GAS LINES FORMING THIS MORNING. PEOPLE STILL HAVE, AS THEY TELL ME, POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS FROM GOING THROUGH MARIA. >>I’M SURE IT DOESN’T HELP THAT THE TERRITORY’S GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN A MESS OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHINGS. THE GOVERNOR HAS STEPPED DOWN. MANY OF THE OFFICIALS IN HIS CABINET ARE GONE. SO YOU HAVE A RELATIVELY NEW GOVERNMENT BEING TESTED WITH THIS STORM. AND YET, THEY SEEM CONFIDENT THEY’VE TAKEN THE RIGHT STEPS AHEAD OF DORIAN, WHAT DO THEY SAY IS GOING TO BE DIFFERENT THIS TIME? >>SO YOU’VE GOT A GOVERNOR WHO’S BEEN IN OFFICE LESS THAN A MONTH. WHO’S LEADING THE EFFORT. BUT FROM WHAT I CAN TELL. MOST EVERYBODY ON THE ISLAND. REGARDLESS OF THEIR POLITICAL PERSUASION IS BACKING HER. THEY WANT HER TO WIN. IF SHE DOES WELL, THEY DO WELL. >>OKAY, THAT MAKES SENSE. SO HOW ARE THEY DOING BETTER? WE WENT TO FEMA TO SEE THE FIVE WAREHOUSES NAY HAVE OPPOSED TO THE ONE THEY HAD AFTER MARIA. FEMA SAID THEY HAVE TEN TIMES THE COMMODITY COMPARED TO WHAT THEY DID BEFORE MARIA. WE LOOKED AT THE INVENTORY YARD, THEY SAID IT WAS FULL. THEY TOLD US WE HAVE MORE THAN $120 MILLION IN INVENTORY. IT SOUNDS GOOD ON PAPER. IT READS WELL ON PAPER. AND IT SOUNDS GOOD WHEN YOU LISTEN TO IT. THE MAN WHO RUNS THE POWER COMPANY MADE A BOLD PREDICTION. HE SAID HE THINKS HE CAN HAVE THE POWER BACK ON IN TWO WEEKS. I WAS LIKE WOW. THAT’S SOMETHING PEOPLE WILL HOLD YOU TO. IF YOU’RE WONDERING HOW HE CAN SAY THAT. HE SAYS THE MAIN TRANSMISSION LINES WERE REPLACED AFTER MARIA. HE BELIEVES THE GRID HAS THE RESILIENCY TO WITHSTAND ANYTHING THIS TROPICAL STORM BRINGS. >>HURRICANE MARIA WAS TWO YEARS AGO. A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE IN THE MINLAND HAVE MOVED PASSED IT AND JUST HAVE KIND OF FORGOTTEN THAT THE EFFECTS OF THE STORM ARE STILL LINGERING. CAN YOU PAINT US A PICTURE AS TO THE CONDITIONS ON THE ISLAND AND WHY A STORM, EVEN IF IT’S NOT A HURRICANE, BUT IT COULD BRING 7, 8, 10 INCHES OF RAIN. WHAT THAT COULD DO TO FOLKS STILL RECOVERING? >>1,000 ROADS ARE STILL IMPASSABLE. 30,000 HOMES ARE STILL COVERED WITH BLUE ROOFS. IF YOU CALL 911. YOU MIGHT WAIT FOR 30 MINUTES, AN HOUR, OR TWO HOURS. THAT’S WHY THIS ISLAND IS SO VULNERABLE TO EVEN A TROPICAL STORM. IF YOU’RE LOOKING AT THIS SAYING DAVID, DON’T OVER BLOW IT. IT’S NOT A HURRICANE. YOU’RE RIGHT. BUT IT’S HEADING TO A PLAY THAT ESSENTIALLY IS THE WEAKEST OF AMERICA’S BEST. PUERTO RICO IS AN AMERICAN TERRITORY, RIGHT? THEY’RE NOT A STATE. THEY DON’T GET THE SAME RESOURCES AS A STATE. BUT WHAT’S DIFFERENT NOW IS THE POWER AUTHORITY HAS MUTUAL AID AGREEMENTS WITH MORE THAN 30 ENTITIES IN THE AGREEMENT. THEY DIDN’T HAVE THAT BEFORE MARIA. WHAT’S DIFFERENT NOW IS FEMA HAS MORE PEOPLE AND COMMODITIES IN PLACE TODAY THAN THEY DID BEFORE MARIA. THERE HAVE BEEN SOME SIGNIFICANT CHANGES. HOPEFULLY DORIAN WILL BE A BIG NOTHING BURGER. AND TOMORROW CBSN WILL SAY IT HIT PUERTO RICO, NO MAJOR IMPACTS, LIFE GOES ON. NEWS CAST THE BEST CASE SCENARIO. BUT THE WORST, LISTEN, I’M FROM LOUISIANA, WE SAW WHAT HURRICANE KATRINA DID TO NEW ORLEANS. MORE PEOPLE DIED IN PUERTO RICO FROM MARIA THAN PEOPLE IN NEW ORLEANS DID FROM KATRINA. YOU DON’T COMPARE DEATHS. THEY’RE BOTH HORRIBLE. BUT I’M TRYING TO GIVE YOU THE CONTEXTUAL MAGNITUDE OF WHAT HAPPENED. THERE WAS A COMPLETE COLLAPSE ON THE ISLAND OF PUERTO RICO. NOBODY COULD TALK TO ANYBODY. THE MAYOR COULDN’T CALL THE GOVERNOR. THE GOVERNOR COULDN’T FIND OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON UNLESS HE DROVE SOMEWHERE. COULDN’T PUT A HELICOPTER OR A BOAT. IT WAS 30 DAYS OF AN ENDLESS EMERGENCY BEFORE THEY GOT THEIR HEAD ABOVE WATER. THAT’S WHY THIS PLACE IS SO VULNERABLE. AND PEOPLE HERE WORRIED. EVEN AS I TURN BEHIND ME AND LOOK AT THE SUNSHINE ON A BEAUTIFUL DAY AS WE WAIT FOR DORIAN TO ROLL IN. >>DAVID, THANK YOU, WE KNOW YOU’LL BE MONITORING THE STORM FOR US. WE’LL SEE YOU IN THE CUSTOMARY HURRICANE GEAR SOON, I’M SURE. DAVID BEGNAUD FROM PUERTO RICO, THANK YOU. >>>DAVID PARKINSON IS TRACKING TROPICAL STORM DORIAN, HE JOINS US NOW, WHERE IS THE STORM? WHAT SHOULD PUERTO RICO EXPECT AT THIS POINT? >>SO THE STORM KEEPS TUGGING NORTH. IT KEEPS STAYING JUST OFFSHORE OF PUERTO RICO. THIS IS THE BEST POSSIBLE SCENARIO. IF PUERTO RICO IS GOING TO HAVE TO GO THROUGH A HURRICANE OR A TROPICAL STORM, THEY’D LIKE TO BE ON THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE STORM, THAT KEEPS THE STORM A LITTLE WEAKER IN TERMS OF THE WIND IMPACTS. THEY’VE STILL GOT STRONG RAIN, BUT AGAIN, EVEN THE HEAVIEST RAIN IS STAYING MOSTLY TO THE EAST SIDE OF THE STORM. SO THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, NOT NECESSARILY A GREAT SITUATION FOR THEM. BUT YOU CAN SEE MOST OF PUERTO RICO IS DODGING THAT BULLET. AS THE STORM MOVES NORTHWEST. YOU’LL NOTICE THE STORM WON’T ACTUALLY GET THAT MUCH WORSE IN TERMS OF ITS PROJECTIONS. SO IT SHOULD GLANCE THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF PUERTO RICO IF IT HITS IT AT ALL. SO THAT’S CERTAINLY SOME REALLY GOOD NEWS THERE. IN TERMS OF THE LATEST STATS ON THE STORM. 60 MILES PER HOUR WINDS. THAT MAY BUMP UP. STORM MOVING NORTHWEST AT 13 MILES AN HOUR. IT’S STILL SOUTHEAST OF ST. CROIX. BUT THAT’S REALLY THE TRAJECTORY WE’LL HAVE IS A NORTHWESTERN PUSH WHICH WILL KEEP IT JUST OFF OF PUERTO RICO. OR GOING JUST OVER THE NORTHEASTERN CORNER OF THE ISLAND. >>AS THE STORM HAS SHIFTED. ORIGINAL HI WE WERE TALKING ABOUT IT WOULD MAYBE GO THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. MAYBE THE MOUNTAINS IN CUBA. INSTEAD, IT’S SHIFTED. THAT’S GOING TO MAKE IT MORE LIKELY TO BE A HURRICANE WHEN IT MOVES OUT OF THE CARIBBEAN TOWARD THE U.S. EVEN THAT TRACK IS CONTINUING TO TICK UP FURTHER OF THE SEABOARD. >>THAT’S CORRECT. WHAT’S GOOD NEWS FOR PUERTO RICO, IS BAD NEWS FOR FOLKS ALONG THE SOUTHEASTERN COAST. IN PARTICULAR, THE TRACK OF THIS STORM IS FOR A STRONGER STORM AS IT CONTINUES TO MOVE TO THE U.S. HERE’S THE INTERESTING THING, I’LL TRY TO SHOW YOU THE TRACK THERE. THERE IT IS. YOU CAN SEE 70 MILES AN HOUR. THE WIND SPEED FOR LATER TODAY. BUT BY THE TIME WE GET TO THE AFTERNOON ON FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY, YOU’RE LOOKING AT A CATEGORY 1, CATEGORY 2 STORM. THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER SAYS WE’RE ON THE CONSERVATIVE SIDE OF THINGS. IT’S PLAUSIBLE THIS STORM BECOMES A CATEGORY 3. AND THAT’S SOMETHING THAT’S ENTIRELY IN THAT CONE. FROM MIAMI ON UP BEYOND THERE. HERE’S THE INTERESTING THING AS WE TAKE A LOOK AT THIS MAP HERE. YOU CAN SEE THE DIRECTION THE STORM IS MOVING IN. THERE’S A HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM JUST TO THE NORTH OF IT. THE QUESTION REALLY IS IS THAT HOW MUCH DOES THAT HIGH SQUISH IT TO THE SOUTH? AS WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE SPAGHETTI MODELS HERE. YOU CAN SEE A PRETTY DECENT BIT OF DIVERGENCE. BUT PART OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE SPAGHETTI MODELS, IF YOU TAKE A LOOK AT WHERE THEY ARE NOW IN TERMS OF COMPARING THE CURRENT POSITION OF THE STORM TO WHERE THEY’RE FORECASTED TO BE. A LOT OF THEM ARE WRONG. LOOK AT THAT. THERE’S THE DOT. THE CENTER OF THE STORM. AND THERE’S ALL THOSE SPAGHETTIS. IF YOU DELETE THOSE SPAGHETTIS OFF OF THE MAP, YOU GET A MUCH CLEARER PICTURE THAT IT’S NORTHERN FLORIDA THAT WE’RE LOOKING AT. >>AND EVEN A CHANCE THAT IT COULD DART UP THE COAST. >>YES, THAT’S THE INTERESTING THING. DOES IT CURVE ALONG THE COAST AND MAKE LAND FALL IN GEORGIA OR SOUTH CAROLINA. OR DOES IT SLINGSHOT AROUND THAT HIGH AND JUST PARALLEL THE COAST. ALL THE WAY UP TO NEW YORK. NOW, WE DON’T THINK THERE WILL BE LAND FALL IN NEW YORK OR THE NORTHEAST OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. BUT IT COULD HAVE IMPACTS ALL THE WAY UP ALONG THE COAST. THAT’S MIDDLE OF THE WEEK. THAT’S A LONG TIME BEFORE WE GET TO THAT. BUT IT’S A REMINDER, IF YOU’RE IN FLORIDA, IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO MAKE SURE YOUR HURRICANE KIT IS PREPARED. AND YOU START TO MAKE PLANS. A LOT OF HOTELS ARE FILLED WITH THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND. A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE RELAXING AND MAYBE NOT PAYING ATTENTION. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS STORM AND MORE SERIOUS THAN IT WAS 24 HOURS AGO. >>DAVID, WE’LL BE WATCHING. >>>OUR CBSN ORIGINALS TEAM TRAVELED TO PUERTO RICO AFTER HURRICANE MARIA TO COVER THE DEVASTATION OF THE STORM. >>>FEMA BRACES FOR A POTENTIALLY DEVASTATING STORM SYSTEM TO MAKE LAND FALL. THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION IS LOOKING TO REDIRECT MILLIONS OF DISASTER RECHIEF FUNDS TO PAY FOR OPERATIONS ALONG THE SOUTHERN BORDER. THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY SAYS IT WILL MOVE $271 MILLION FROM ITS BUDGET TO HELP BUILD LARGER MIGRANT DETENTION FACILITIES AND COURTS. DHS SAYS THE TRANSFER WILL NOT AFFECT DISASTER RELIEF OPERATIONS BUT ONE HOUSE DEMOCRAT IS SKEPTICAL ARGUING THE MOVE COULD HAVE QUOTE DEADLY CONSEQUENCES. LONG TIME GEORGIA SENATOR, JOHNNY ISAACSON ANNOUNCED HE’S STEPPING DOWN AT THE END OF THE YEAR, HALF WAY THROUGH HIS CURRENT TERM, IN A STATEMENT, HE SAYS I’M LEAVING A JOB I LOVE BECAUSE MY HEALTH CHALLENGES ARE TAKING THEIR TOLL ON ME, MY FAMILY, AND MY STAFF. ISACKSON HAS PARKINSONS DISEASE AND HE SUFFERED A BAD FALL EARLIER THIS SUMMER. HE’S THE CHAIRMAN OF THE VETERAN’S AFFAIRS COMMITTEE AND THE ETHICS COMMITTEE. HE’S 74 YEARS OLD. GEORGIA’S REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR WILL APPOINT A REPLACEMENT. AND THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL ELECTION IN 2020 TO FILL THE REST OF THE SENATOR’S TERM. >>>QUEEN HIS BETH APPROVED PRIME MINISTER BORIS JOHNSON’S REQUEST TO SUSPEND BRITAIN’S PARLIAMENT. THE MOVE WILL SHORTEN A TIGHT DEADLINE. NOW, THEY ONLY HAVE FOUR DAYS TO CREATE THE LEGISLATION NEEDED TO PREVENT JOHNSON SUSPENSION. EARLIER I SPOKE TO IAN LEE OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE PRIME MINISTER’S MOVE. BRITISH PRIME MINISTER BORIS JOHNSON ASKED THE QUEEN TO SUSPEND PARLIAMENT UNTIL JUST TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE BREXIT DEADLINE. THE MOVE WILL SHORTEN ANY ALL READY TIGHT — SHORTEN AN ALL READY TIGHT DEADLINE FOR PREVENTING THE UK FROM LEAVING THE EUROPEAN UNION. LAWMAKERS HAVE ONLY FOUR DAYS TO CREATE LEGISLATION TO STOP JOHNSON’S SUSPENSION. IAN LEE IS OUTSIDE PARLIAMENT FOLLOWING IT ALL AS IT DEVELOPS. IT’S BEEN A BUSY MORNING. BREAK DOWN FOR US, WHAT PROMPTED THIS MOVE? HOW ARE PEOPLE RESPONDING? >>CHRIS, BORIS JOHNSON USED HIS NUCLEAR OPTION WHEN HE ANNOUNCED PLANS TO SUSPEND PARLIAMENT TO TRY TO FORCE THROUGH A NO DEAL BREXIT. HE HAS PROMISED TO TAKE THE UNITED KINGDOM OUT OF THE EU BY THE END OF OCTOBER WITH OUR WITHOUT A DEAL. IT’S A MORE DO OR DIE AS HE PUTS IT. HIS A LITTLE POWERPLAY WILL HAVE THE QUEEN SUSPENDED PARLIAMENT IN EARLY SEPTEMBER TO OCTOBER 14th. PARLIAMENT WON’T HAVE TIME TO PASS NEW LAWS THAT BLOCK ANEW DEAL BREXIT WHEN THEY RECONVENE. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY CONTROVERSIAL MOVE. MEMBERS OF BORIS JOHNSON’S PARTY WARN

  1. Flee Puerto Rico before it is too late and you are stuck for months without utilities. 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

  2. By the time it gets to Florida it's going to be a category 2 which will cause much more damage, maybe if the politicians like the governor a Puerto Rico didn't steal the money they might at least have their power grip up and running, Miami already sent search and rescue to Puerto Rico, I guess we could use the Coast Guard here like we did with the other storms!!

  3. yep its soon time for Floridians to get & leave that automobile of theirs the other side of that heavy pole, manky old brick wall and rickety tree, else how else will it get crushed. And don't forget to leave them in a car park located right in line with the landfall location, as close to the coast as you can, else how will it get flooded.

Have it directly in front of your house in low lying regions as well, not 1/2 mile away on higher ground, cause you have to get it totally submerged and ruined, then bellyache all over it, cause 'nothing' could have been done even with a weeks notice.

Of cause all the boat owners, don't be in preparation to sail either up or down the coast to safer location, just leave it in port tied up to get smashed to pieces. Hundreds of Millions of dollars SCAMMED out of fellow insurance policy holders pockets.

They'll be the ones paying for this, many due to Insurance being diversified with risk spread out all around the World. Some poor folk who can ill afford it in some far off place will be paying for Lazy SCAMMING Americans all aided and abetted by Local & National Govt. getting that money in from outside nations, a nice National Govt SCAM.

Oh and don't forget, to leave that big old nasty tall tree, the one right in front of your house, the one you always worry will crush your house in high winds. Whatever you do don't get it trimmed up in the mean time or ever, just play the odds and sit back and think of Uncle Sam, that is until for some unfortunates it smashes their property in half.

All under the neglectful watching eye of Local & National Govt barking out their orders. All ready to capitalise POLITICALLY out of any potential outcome, they have their news media speak scripts already prepared. IT IS AN UTTER PANTOMIME all part of the US Corruption.

  4. Well did anyone catch that CONGRESS, hadn't given the people of PR, and their countries ( state) government stole from their own people. Not Trump.

  5. My guess is the power guy is trying to look good because he believes that it won’t come close to the worst case scenario of islandwide power outage with a tropical storm/Cat 1.

It hits, power for… let’s say 15% goes down with minimal roads blocked by trees, etc… It’s something he can feasibly handle, things get fixed adequately within a week. It makes him look like he really could have handled 100% outage to some people.

Edit: Giving him the benefit of the doubt, he’s doing this to keep panic down before and after the storm, hopes things go well enough and learns how the system copes so when a bigger storm hits he can make those claims more sincerely.

  6. A friend had her fam in PR during Maria…..atrocities galore there……I'm glad they will not take a direct hit this time…….however….I'm in the Carolinas….I'm supposed to head to NY that Tuesday….may have to go earlier…..

  7. Ahhh and the uneducated keyboard hero’s are on full force. I Love PR and wish the beautiful island the best of luck.

  12. Trump is a Cruel and Racist President! He must go now! He doesn't govern, he does not work…he plays golf and criticizes American Cities and States! Trump works for Satin, and pleads with Russia to save him!

  13. We can't forget all the innocent Children and Families at our boarder! I reject Trumps Russian influence, his hatred, his benign disregard to OUR USA! Too our Citizens and our Asylum Seekers! God Bless ALL of Us, Vote Trump the impaler out!

  14. Pun n' Cheek…I sure wish this very young, educated Weather forecaster…Would do something about his eye brows! They are very distracting, and should be waxed! Plus, that would make him even more handsome…Just saying…Somebody who cuts his hair or something should suggest that idea! After all he's on international Weather media! Shape up!
