Leadership lived: Ahja Howard

My name is Ahja Howard. I’m a sophomore and I’m a double major in
accounting and business. Currently, I’m the president of SAC. SAC is the Student Activities Committee and
we organize big events on campus, like Homecoming, Late Nite and Springfest. Tonight is our first event, we’re doing a
Scavenger Hunt. Springfest is a week-long event where students
get into teams up to 15 and they do an event each night and they… it’s a friendly competition. It also is community-based and education. Spin that wheel! Springfest is a lot of work. Springfest is basically like between four
to six months to plan it. It’s really a lot of work and it’s a lot of
dedication and it’s a lot of commitment. I’m from Chicago, Illinois, and I decided
to come to UIS because I wanted to get away from home and I wanted to actually get a real
campus college life. I like the smallness, like how it’s small,
the class size. I like how diverse it is. I love the opportunities I have here. I get so many opportunities every time I put
myself out there. I’m a mentor in a program called 4-H and next
week I’m going to get inducted into the National Society of Leadership and Success and I’m
also a member of Necessary Steps, which is a first generation program. UIS taught me that if you don’t put yourself
out there, then you won’t be known. You have to have an open mind to challenge
yourself and know that it’s okay to fall, make a mistake. It made me realize that I can do anything
I put my mind to, even the mentors and friends that I gained here also helped me. It’s okay to fall, but always get back up
and try again. I gained so much being here. If I could recommend anybody to a school, I would
recommend them this school. I love it. I don’t regret it at all.
