KSFY 10pm News, May 24, 2003

SHE’S TURNED A LITTLE NOISE INTO A HUGE SUCCESS…. WE’LL EXPLAIN. AND….. INFORMATION IS SURFACING ABOUT THE CRASH OF GYRO- COPTER IN SOUTH DAKOTA. THE NEWS STARTS RIGHT NOW ON KSFY. WE HAVE NEW INFORMATION TONIGHT ABOUT THE PILOT AND GYRO-PLANE THAT CRASHED NEAR SOUTH SHORE THIS WEEK. WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON INVESTIGATORS FOUND THE AIRCRAFT WRECKAGE, AND THE BODY OF PILOT DR. JOHN BARR. AN INITIAL REPORT BY THE NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD SAYS THE GYRO-PLANE CRASHED AT 1:30 MONDAY MORNING. THE REPORT SAYS WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE CLEAR AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH. IT ALSO DESCRIBES BARR AS A STUDENT PILOT. ACCORDING TO THE REPORT, BARR DID NOT FILE A FLIGHT PLAN AND WAS LAST SEEN AT JOE FOSS FIELD IN SIOUX FALLS WHERE HE STOPPED TO REFUEL ABOUT 11:30 SUNDAY NIGHT. THE REPORT ALSO SAID THE GYRO-PLANE WAS A PRODUCTION MODEL, NOT AN EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT AS IT WAS FIRST THOUGHT. TODAY EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT FLYERS SAY THEY HOPE THE ACCIDENT WON’T GIVE THEIR HOBBY A BAD NAME. THE TEA CHAPTER OF THE EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION HAS ABOUT 90 MEMBERS. THEY SAY ALL THEIR PLANES ARE INSPECTED BY THE F-A-A, AND MAY BE SAFER THAN PRODUCTION MODELS. MANY GET INTO EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT BECAUSE IT’S CHEAPER, THE PLANES CAN DO MORE, AND PILOTS CAN CUSTOMIZE THEIR AIRPLANES. “Experimental, home built, I don’t know what the right word is. They’re no longer experimental airplanes.” MEMBERS SAY PART OF THEIR WORK IS EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY ABOUT FLYING. ON SATURDAY, JUNE 14TH THEY’LL OFFER FREE PLANE RIDES TO KIDS AGE 8 TO 17. THE RIDES WILL BE OFFERED FROM 7AM UNTIL NOON. CERTAINLY IT WAS A GREAT DAY TO GET UP IN THE AIR FOR A FLIGHT…. OR DO ANYTHING OUTDOORS FOR THAT MATTER. AARON, IT SOUNDS LIKE NO ONE’S WEEKEND PLANS ARE GOING TO BE RUINED BY MOTHER NATURE. SOUTH DAKOTA SENATOR TOM DASCHLE DID NOT MENTION ANY OF THE HOT POLITICAL TOPICS IN TODAY’S DEMOCRATIC RADIO ADDRESS TO THE NATION. INSTEAD THE SENATE MINORITY LEADER THANKED ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO PLACED THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE, FOR THE SAFETY OF AMERICANS. HE ALSO TOOK TIME THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND TO SPEAK ABOUT AND HONOR THE SOUTH DAKOTA SOLDIER WHO LOST HIS LIFE FIGHTING IN THE WAR WITH IRAQ. “Hans Gukeisen was 31 years old. He was the first South Dakotan — and one of more than 150 members of the U.S. armed forces — killed in the Iraq conflict. Since last Memorial Day, 33 other members of America’s armed forces have given their lives to defend freedom in Afghanistan and other nations. Each of them was someone’s son or daughter, someone’s brother or sister, father or mother or friend. And each of them loved life. But they loved this nation, and what it stands for, even more.” AS OF YESTERDAY THERE HAVE BEEN 196 CONFIRMED COALITION DEATHS IN THE WAR WITH IRAQ. THREE SOUTH DAKOTA NATIONAL GUARD SOLDIERS WHO WERE DEPLOYED TO THE MIDDLE EAST REMAIN IN CRITICAL, BUT STABLE CONDITION TONIGHT. SPECIALIST BRIAN MOE OF CLEAR LAKE, SERGEANT CHRISTIAN VIZECKY OF ASTORIA, AND SERGEANT DONALD PETERS OF FLANDREAU BELONG TO THE 727-TH TRANSPORTATION COMPANY. THE THREE WERE DRIVERS IN A TRUCK CONVOY THAT PULLED OVER FOR A REST STOP AND WERE STANDING OUTSIDE WHEN A PASSING VEHICLE HIT THEM. OFFICIALS SAY THE ACCIDENT IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND IS ALSO A WEEKEND FULL OF TRAVEL. BUT WITH OFFICIALS CONCERNED THAT A TERROR ATTACK MAY BE IMMINENT, HOLIDAY TRAVEL IS TAKING PLACE UNDER THE CLOSE WATCH OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES. JEANN MESERVE REPORTS FROM WASHINGTON. FOR AIR TRAVELERS A LONG WEEKEND MEANS LONG LINES…MADE EVEN LONGER THIS MEMORIAL DAY BY THREAT LEVEL ORANGE SECURITY MEASURES. PARKING RESTRICTIONS, MORE THOROUGH SEARCHES AND MORE OF THEM. NAT SOT ALL ABOARD! AN ESTIMATED QUARTER OF A MILLION PEOPLE WILL GET ALL ABOARD AMTAK BEFORE TUESDAY. THERE’S NO SCREENING OF PASSENGERS OR BAGS, BUT THERE IS OTHER SECURITY. STRESSEL SOT: “There are more officers on patrol at any given time, but many of the countermeasures that have been intiated are ivisible to the traveling public, things like moitoring the infrastructure. Key bridges and tunnels and the like.” WASHINGTON’S METRORAIL SYSTEM HAS CANCELLED LEAVE FOR TRANSIT POLICE OFFICERS. OTHER EMPLOYEES ARE IN HIGH VISIBILITY ORANGE VESTS SO RIDERS CAN FIND THEM WITH QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS. NAT SOT ANNOUNCEMENT… PASSENGERS ARE ASKED TO BE VIGILANT, AND ARE GIVEN ADVICE ON HOW TO STAY SAFE. IN NEW YORK, NATIONAL GUARDSMAN ARE AUGMENTING POLICE PATROLS OF PENN STATION AND OTHER TRANSPORTATION HUBS. SECURITY AT BRIDGES AND TUNNELS AND KEY INTERCHANGES MAY BE APPARENT TO DRIVERS, AND IN SOME STATES COMMERCIAL VEHICLES WILL BE SUBJECT TO INCREASED INSPECTIONS. BUT FOR THE MOST PART THE BIGGEST HEADACHE FOR DRIVERS WILL BE THE SHEER NUMBER OF PEOPLE ON THE ROAD, AN ESTIMATED 29- POINT-FOUR MILLION NATIONWIDE. STAND-UP TRIPLE A ESTIMATES THAT AIR TRAVEL IS DOWN TWO AND A HALF PERCENT FOOR LAST YEAR. THE SOUR ECONOMY IS BELIEVED TO BE THE PRINCIPAL REASON, THOUGH THREAT LEVEL ORANGE MAY BE A FACTOR. AS FOR HOW LONG WE’LL BE AT ORANGE, OFFICIALS SAY THE LEVEL OF INTELLIGENCE CHATTER IS STILL HIGH, BUT OTHERWISE THINGS ARE QUOTE, EERILY QUIET. BUT DOES THE RISE IN THE TERROR ALERT THIS WEEKEND MAKE YOU SUSPICIOUS OF A TERRORIST ATTACK HERE IN SOUTH DAKOTA? KSFY’S LEAH ORSACK TAKES A CLOSER LOOK AT TERRORISM WORRIES TOMORROW NIGHT AT TEN, ON KSFY. MINNESOTA LAWMAKERS WON’T BE ABLE TO WRAP UP THE SPECIAL SESSION BY MEMORIAL DAY. RANK AND FILE LEGISLATORS WERE SENT HOME FOR THE WEEKEND, BUT TOP NEGOTIATORS STAYED PUT. THEY HOPE TO GET THE FOUR REMAINING BUDGET BILLS READY FOR A VOTE BY TUESDAY. THE HOUSE PASSED A NUCLEAR WASTE BILL AND A FEW OTHER SMALL PROPOSALS TODAY, THEN ADJOURNED UNTIL TUESDAY ALONG WITH THE SENATE. NATE MAJORITY LEADER JOHN HOTTINGER SAYS HE’S MORE OPTIMISTIC NOW THAN HE HAS BEEN LATELY ABOUT AN OVERALL DEAL WOULD BE REACHED SOON ON THE OUTSTANDING BILLS. THEY FAKED A ROBBERY BY SHOOTING THEMSELVES. WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE 2 IOWA TEENS? DEREK KRAAYENBRINK AND NICHOLAS LOKHORST OF HULL PLEADED GUILTY IN FEBRUARY TO SECOND DEGREE THEFT, CONSPIRACY, CARRYING WEAPONS AND FILING A FALSE REPORT. THE 17 YEAR OLDS WERE ACTUALLY 16 WHEN THEY STOLE MONEY FROM KATS OIL COMPANY IN JANUARY, WHERE KRAAYENBRINK WORKS. THEY THEN MADE UP A STORY SAYING THEY HAD BEEN ROBBED AND SHOT. THE TWO TEENAGERS HAVE BEEN ORDERED TO DO COMMUNITY SERVICE, PAY RESTITUTION AND APOLOGIZE TO THE VICTIMS. AN ABERDEEN MAN WILL SPEND THE NEXT TWO DECADES BEHIND BARS. INSTEAD OF SPENDING THE REST OF HIS LIFE IN PRISON, 21-YEAR-OLD JASON LICKFELT HAS BEEN SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR DISTRIBUTING THE METHADONE THAT CAUSED A FRIEND’S DEATH. IN DECEMBER A JURY CONVICTED LICKFELT OF 5 CHARGES OF METHADONE DISTRIBUTION, ONE COUNT WHICH RESULTED IN THE AUGUST 2001 DEATH OF 20-YEAR-OLD DERRON HIER. METHADONE IS A SYNTHETIC NARCOTIC DRUG THAT IS OFTEN USED TO TREAT HEROIN AND MORPHINE ADDICTS. HOW SAFE DO YOU FEEL IN SOUTH DAKOTA? CRIME IS DOWN IN GENERAL, BUT VIOLENT CRIMES ARE UP. A REPORT RELEASED BY STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL LARRY LONG SHOWS CRIME IN THE STATE DECREASED IN 2002 FROM 2001. PROPERTY CRIMES SUCH AS BURGLARY, LARCENY AND VEHICLE THEFT ALL SAW SLIGHT DECREASES LAST YEAR. BUT THE NUMBERS ALSO SHOW AN INCREASE IN VIOLENT CRIMES. THE NUMBER OF FORCIBLE RAPES AND AGGRAVATED ASSAULTS WENT UP. THE NUMBER OF MURDERS AND MANSLAUGHTERS DECREASED FROM NINE IN 2001 TO 8 LAST YEAR. HOW WELL CAN YOU WHISTLE A TUNE? WE FOUND A MILLER WOMAN WHO HAS THE TITLE OF BEING THE BEST IN THE WORLD. K-S-F-Y’S CHRIS STUDER INTRODUCES US TO CAROLE SKINNER, WHO SPENDS HER TIME WHISTLING DIXIE. CAROLE SKINNER HAS ALWAYS BEEN PUTTING HER LIPS TOGETHER TO MAKE MUSIC. 26:30″Ever since I was a kid.” BUT LAST YEAR WAS THE FIRST TIME SHE WHISTLED COMPETITIVELY. SKINNER WON THE INTERNATIONAL WHISTLING CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2002, AND WON THE TITLE AGAIN LAST MONTH. 1:25″When they announced Carole Skinner from Miller, South Dakota, I thought, ‘Wow, I really put Miller, South Dakota on the map.” SHE TRAVELED TO LOUISBURG, NORTH CAROLINA, AND CAME HOME A WORLD CHAMPION. SKINNER PRACTICES ABOUT AN HOUR A DAY, BUT SHE’S ALWAYS WHISTLING AROUND THE HOUSE…MUCH TO THE DELIGHT OF HER HUSBAND WARREN, HE NEVER GETS ANNOYED, EXCEPT WHEN HE’S TRYING TO NAP. 6:03″She could always whistle. All the time we’ve been married, she was always whistling, but I didn’t think she was that good.” BUT PRACTICE HAS MADE PERFECT FOR THIS RETIRED FARMER’S WIFE. SHE’S DEVELOPED HER TALENT TO BECOME THE BEST IN THE WORLD. standup”Most competitive whistlers call themselves, “The Whistler,” but Carole chose, “Jus’ Whistlin’,” as her trademark. She’s even named her CD after it.” AND THOSE CD’S SELL LIKE HOTCAKES AT HER PERFORMANCES. SHE MOSTLY WHISTLES AT RETIREMENT HOMES, AND OTHER GATHERINGS, BUT ALSO SELLS HER WHISTLING ALBUM AT THE MILLER DRUG STORE. 2:44″I think Miller’s probably saturated by now.” EVEN THOUGH HER MANY PERFORMANCES KEEP HER BUSY, THEY’LL KEEP GOING UNTIL SHE CAN’T GO ANYMORE…AND SHE’LL CONTINUE TO WHISTLE THE DAY AWAY…IN MILLER, CHRIS STUDER, KSFY. CAROLE SAYS SHE’LL CONTINUE TO WHISTLE COMPETIVELY, BUT SHE’S SO TALENTED, THE CONTEST JUDGES ASKED HER NOT TO COMPETE NEXT YEAR TO GIVE SOMEONE ELSE A CHANCE. HUNDREDS OF BIKERS HOPPED ON THEIR HOGS AND CRUISED THE AREA THIS AFTERNOON. BUT, THIS WAS NO LEISURE RIDE…. THE 100-MILE ROUTE WAS PART OF THE SIOUX FALLS AREA HUMANE SOCIETY’S 4TH ANNUAL POKER RUN. ALL MONEY RAISED GOES TO THE SHELTER WHICH PROVIDES A PLACE FOR ANIMALS TO STAY AND BE CARED FOR UNTIL THEY’RE GIVEN A GOOD HOME. 00:01:49 This is my first run of the year. We’re just going to have a lot of fun. We’re lucky to have a good cause to contribute to, and we do. Plus, we have a good time at the same time. AFTER THE RIDE, EVERYONE GOT A CHANCE TO HANG OUT, RELAX AND WIN SOME PRIZES. THE HUMANE SOCIETY HOPED TO HAVE 600 RIDERS THIS YEAR AND REACH IT’S GOAL OF 10-THOUSAND DOLLARS. THAT WOULD BE 35- HUNDRED DOLLARS MORE THAN LAST YEAR. YOU CAN LEARN MORE ABOUT THE HUMANE SOCIETY AND THE ADORABLE ANIMALS THAT NEED A HOME, ON THIS WEEK DAKOTA, RIGHT AFTER OUR NEWSCAST.
