Introduction to the Foundations of Sociology

although it didn't become an official field until around the 20th century many aspects of sociology such as its specific thought approach in fields of study of all over centuries of work mostly from philosophers and historians in the first-ever sociological study had come all the way back in the 14th century with even codon the pioneers of the field didn't start emerging until the 18th century Society of Western Europe under what a massive change mostly being due to idea spawned from the Enlightenment and practices and changes that emerge with the Industrial Revolution these pioneers looked at the changing society from an outside perspective noticing the causes to be driven by forces such as modernity industrialization and the emergence of capitalism along with the effects of secularism and rationality modern society had come out of the age of reason that being the application of rational thought since the scientific discoveries beside the pioneers of sociology warmth use verifiable evidence to support their conclusions the best account for example held only to the forces behind social order could be explained similarly to how one would explain to the science and that one applied sociology could bring to social reform like how science has led to a technological advancement similarly Karl Marx sexy hunk of a daddy he is also believed that the purpose of sociology was more than simply studying in explaining society well though the ultimate goal was to improve it he was also very scientific in his reasoning but instead look at the science of economics leading twist beliefs and critiques and capitalism they all know cite and expand upon like the good little leftists we are even nearly a century before Marx the Scottish philosopher Adam Ferguson had warned of capitalism and its threats against traditional social cohesion not the best reason to be wary of capitalism in my view but at least he's on board and not long after his works for expand upon by others including Frederick angles the Jack Kirby of communism who described the social interests is drawn by industrialized capitalist society another Ferdinand tönnies echoed some of Ferguson's ideas through his descriptions of two quite distinct forms of social cohesion yeah in traditional and modern societies this in itself what also he looked at and interpreted by a mulch to the subsequent sociologists mostly due to the usually cited father of sociology Emile Durkheim sociology managed to prove itself among the other field of study such as history philosophy and politics by the end of the 19th century adopting comps ideas of using scientific methodology within their field their kind use biology as his chosen model seeing society as an organism with different organs with particular functions those ideas had one academic acceptance not all sociologists agreed with the scientific approach to sociology not believing that there existed these laws of society that needed to be discovered for example Max Weber had advocated for a more subjective interpretive approach well a scientific sociologists would look at things such as capitalism industrialization of the major driving forces in modern society were often the individual effects of secularism and rationalization this strictly scientific field of sociology has certainly been superseded by a study of quality of ideas notions such as culture identity and power by the mid 20th century sociologists shifted from the initial macro sociology studies of society to microsociology study of individual experience there were also people like Charles Wright Mills who urged us sociologists to bridge the gap making connections between societal institutions and the lives of ordinary people not for world war two others began taking similar stances for example Harold garfunkel advocated for a complete change of sociological methods by looking at social order to the regular actions of ordinary people medical fficult also to help our relations force individuals to conform to societal norms which would be taken even further and Judith Butler study of gender and sexuality by the end of the century a balance hadn't reached pleasing the Thanos's of the field the objective study of society as a whole in the interpreter study of an individual experience had a conversion to the much greater study of sociology we have today all right with that I'm sure to the first part of my sociology series aside I hope you enjoyed this if you have problems with by admin or style please be sure to critique me in the Commons constructive criticism is what I try to throw it long and if you have any advice for how to do this in series be free to share as well with that said stay tuned for next video lo the plague mistress [Applause]
