>>>>DWANE: WE’VE ALL HEARD OF EARTHQUAKES
BUT A SCIENTIST SAYS IT WAS A SKY QUAKE SHAKING UP SAN DIEGO TODAY.
THE STORY COMING UP ON KPBS EVENING EDITION.>>>>JOANNE: I’M JOANNE FARYON, HEALTH CARE,
HEALTH CARE AND HEALTH CARE AT THE ROUND TABLE THE ANALYSIS THE MORNING AFTER.
>>>>DWANE: ALSO, TONIGHT BHIE SAN DIEGO AREA HOSPITALS UNANIMOUSLY SUPPORT THE NEW HEALTH
CARE LAW. AND YOUNGSTERS ARE HAVING FUN WITH SCIENCE
AT SAN DIEGO STATE THIS SUMMER. KPBS EVENING EDITION STARTS NOW.
RN>>>>DWANE: GOOD EVENING, THANK YOU FOR JOINING
US, I’M DWANE BROWN. A SAN DIEGO SCIENTIST SAYS A SKY QUAKE SHOOK
SAN DIEGO EARLIER TODAY, PEOPLE REPORT AD LOUD BOOM AND SHAKING AT ABOUT 12:45ハP.M.
THIS AFTERNOON FELT ALL AROUND THE COUNTY FROM OCEANSIDE DOWN TO NATIONAL CITY.
NO EARTHQUAKES WERE RECORDED AND MILITARY SAYS THEIR PLANES DIDN’T CAUSE IT.
A RESEARCHER WITH THE SCRIPPS INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAPHY SAYS OFF SHORE MILITARY ACTIVITY
IS TO BLAME. CHRISTOPHER WALKER SAYS IT WAS AN ATMOSPHERIC
TRIMMER. HE SAYS THE LIKELY CAUSE OF THE SKY QUAKES
IS ROUTINELY MILITARY, OFF THE COAST OF SAN DIEGO AT LEAST 50 MILES AWAY.
A SIMILAR INCIDENT HAPPENED ON APRIL 13. WALKER SAYS THE SOUND FROM THE TRAINING ZONES
CAN BE BLOWN TOWARDS SAN DIEGO BY VERY STRONG WINDS IN THE ATMOSPHERE.
RESEARCHERS FROM SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY ARE HELPING FIRST RESPONDERS BATTLE A MASSIVE
WILD FIRE IN COLORADO FROM THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY.
SUSAN MURRAY JOINS US TO EXPLAIN HOW SOCIAL MEDIA IS LAYING A ROLE.
TELL US HOW SDSU RESEARCHERS, ARE INVOLVED.>>>>: DIRECTER ERIC FROST AND HIS TEAM ARE
CREATING THREE DIMENSIONAL MAPS FOR EMERGENCY RESPONDERS.
THEY MAKE THE IMAGERY BY COLLECTING MASSIVE AMOUNTS FROM SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE END RESULT
IS A DETAILED VISUALIZATION OF THE PERIMETER, TOPOGRAPHY, THE OVERALL GOAL IS TO SAVE LIVES
AND PROPERTY AND TO INCREASE FIRE FIGHTER SAFETY.
>>>>DWANE: HOW DOES SOCIAL MEDIA FIT INTO THIS PROCESS?
>>>>: TWITTER HAS BECOME AN INVALUABLE TOOL. WHEN SOMEWHERE NEED NEAR THE SCENE OF A FIRE
SENDS A TWEET WITH THE PHOTO, THE VIZ LAB HAS AN IMAGE AND A TIME STAMP ON THE LOCATION.
HASH TAGS HELP CREATE PATTERNS OF DIT UH. FROST SAYS THE HASH TAG WAS USED MORE THAN
10,000 TIMES IN JUST ONE NIGHT L.OF THOSE OBSERVATIONS HELPED CREATE THE DETAILED VISUALATIONS.
>>>>DWANE: HOW DOES THIS ACTUALLY HELP THE PUBLIC IN COLORADO?
>>>>: ERIC FROST SAYS THE GOAL IS TO TAKE THE DATA AND PUT IT OUT FOO LET THEM KNOW
WHAT’S HAPPENING FROM MOMENT TO MOMENT.>>>>DWANE: ALL RIGHT, KPBS REPORTER SUSAN
MURPHY. THE MARINE CORPS TONIGHT IS INVESTIGATING
A RECRUIT’S DEATH. HE PASSED OUT AFTER TAKING AN INITIAL STRENGTH
TEST. THE TEST IS DONE TO DETERMINE WEATHER WHETHER A RECRUIT IS READY FOR TRAINING.
IT INCLUDES PULLING UP AND HANGING FROM A BAR FOR 12 SECONDS, A TIMED 1.5 MILE RUN.
THE RECRUIT WAS DECLARED DEAD AT SCRIPPS HOSPITAL. THE COUNTY ASSESSOR SAYS SAN DIEGO’S SOFT
REAL ESTATE MARKET IS NEGATIVELY AFFECTING, TAXES DOWN 0.4% THIS YEAR.
3.8ハBILLION DETECTED TO BE MADE THIS YEAR, BUT LESS FROM CITIES SUCH AS CHULA VISTA,
AND CARLSBAD WHERE VALUES FELL SIGNIFICANTLY DURING THE CRISIS.
OUT OF THE 18 INCORPORATED CITIES IN THE COUNTY, SIX EXPERIENCED A SMALL DECLINE IN VALUE.
FEDERAL REGULATORS ORDERED TOYOTA TO RECALL HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF SUVS TO FIX THE 2010
LEXUS RX350 AND 450 MODELS TO A SHRINK
IN 2009. TOYOTA RECALLED MORE THAN 14ハMILLION VEHICLES
TO FIX STICKY GAS PEDALS AND FLOOR MAT PEDALS. THE PEOPLE SHOULD REMOVE THE DRIVER’S SIDE
FLOOR MAT AND HAVE THEIR VEHICLE SERVICED IMMEDIATELY.
TOYOTA SAYS DEALERS WILL FIX THE PROBLEM FOR FREE.
WATER WILL BE MORE EXPENSIVE NEXT YEAR. SAN DIEGO COUNTY’S WATER AUTHORITY HAS VOTED
TO RAISE RATES NEARLY BY 10%. THE INCREASE WILL START ON JANUARYハ1.
WATER OFFICIALS SAY IT’S NEEDED BECAUSE OF A RATE HIKE.
THE PRIMARY WATER SUPPLIER IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. A MEDICAL TRADE GROUP SAYS HOSPITALS IN SAN
DIEGO AND IMPERIAL COUNTIES ARE IN UNANIMOUS SUPPORT OF THE HEALTH CARE LAW.
THE HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION SAYS IT EASE AS FINANCIAL BURDEN FOR MEDICAL PROVIDERS.
CURRENT LAW REQUIRES TREATING PEOPLE WHETHER OR NOT THEY HAVE INSURANCE.
MORE THAN A HALF MILLION PEOPLE ARE WITHOUT INSURANCE IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY.
ABOUT 200,000 PEOPLE WILL NOW BE PROVIDED COVERAGE.
THE HIGH COURTS HEALTH CARE RULING IS JUST ONE OF THE SUBJECTS JO JOANNE FARYON IS TALKING
ABOUT WITH HER GUESTS AT THE ROUND TABLE.>>>>JOANNE: THE U.S. SUPREME COURT SET THE
AGENDA FOR END OF THE WEEK NEWS SHOWS. JOINING ME TO TALK ABOUT THE HEALTH CARE DECISION
AND THE OARLGT BIG CASES DECIDED THIS WEEK, KENNY GOLDBERG, AND TONY PERRY.
SO, KENNY, BY NOW, PEOPLE KNOW THAT THE AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE ACT WAS UP HELD BOY THE COURT.
THE INDIVIDUAL MANDATE THAT SAYS EVERYONE HAS TO BUY HEALTH INSURANCE, THAT WAS UP HELD
BY THE COURT. DID THIS RULING SURPRISE YOU?
>>>>: I WAS FLABBER GASSED. THAT MORNING, I WAS SHOCKED BECAUSE I AND
SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO GO TOTALLY THE OARGTD WAY.
I WAS BLOWED OVER WHEN IT HAPPENED I, TOO, WAS.
>>>>: I, TOO, WAS BLOWN OVER. THE ONLY AM BEING AN AMATEUR IN THIS, I WAS
BLOWN OVER TOO.>>>>JOANNE: ONE OF THE LEGAL EXPERTS TOLD
ME IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASY FOR THE COURT TO SAY THIS IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL.
IT ACTUALLY TOOK WILL TO FIND IT CONSTITUTIONAL. DO YOU THINK HE’S RIGHT?
>>>>: I THINK THERE’S A LOT OF SPK YLINGS SPECULATIONS ABOUT WHAT THIS KIND OF ARGUMENT
THAT JUSTICE ROBBER TS HAD TO CRAFT OUT OF NOTHING TO JUSTIFY THIS.
HE COULD BE RIGHT.>>>>: WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THE ANALYSIS NOW
THAT HE DID THIS TO PRESERVE THE REPUTATION OF THE COURTS SO THE COURT DIND DIDN’T LOOK
POLITICALLY PARTISANNED, WHAT WILL YOU MAKE OF THAT?
>>>>: THAT’S CERTAIN WHREA A POSSIBILITY. WE DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY’RE THINKING.
IT COULD HAVE BEEN MAYBE HE ACTUALLY REALLY BELIEVED WHAT HE WROTE.
>>>>: YET, HE JUSTIFIED THE ACTED IN A WAY THE PRESIDENT OF UNITED STATES SAYS IT WAS
NT. OBAMA SCEZ IT’S SAYS IT’S NOT A TAX THE SOLICITOR
JEN RT WE ALL THOUGHT WAS AN IDIOT WHEN HE MADE THE BILL.
>>>>JOANNE: AND MAYBE THE ADMINISTRATION IS SMART THAN WE THINK TOO AND THEY KNEW THIS
ALL ALONG. WHY SAY IT’S A TAX UNTIL YOU HAVE TO SAY IT’S
A TAX. LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS.
IN SAN DIEGO WE HAVE 600,000 PEOPLE IN THE COUNTY UNINSURED.
WHAT WILL THIS LAW MEAN TO THEM?>>>>: IN CALIFORNIA, THE MED U CAL PROGRAM
WILL BE EXPANDED STATE WIDE TO INCLUDE ABOUT 2ハMILLION MORE PEOPLE.
SAN DIEGO COUNTY BETWEEN THE MED U CAL EXPANSION BE ABOUT 200,000 PEOPLE THAT WILL COME OFF
THE UNINSURED ROLES AND BE INSURABLE UNDER THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT.
WHAT WON’T CHANGEハ NOTHING WILL CHANGE FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE INSURANCE.
FOR THE UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS THERE’S NO PROVISION TO HELP THEM.
>>>>: CALIFORNIA HAS BEEN A LEADER IN TERMS OF MOVING FORWARD ON THE MED U KAID EXPANSION?
>>>>: IT HAS AND IT DID NOT JOIN IN THE LAWSUITS. A LOT OF STATES NIBBLED AWAY AT A WHRITTAL
BIT OF THIS, AND DID IT TURN IT AWAY, THEY’VE BEEN PUT IN THEIR PLACE.
CALIFORNIA REALLY HAS NOT BEEN AGAINST THIS. GOVERNOR BROWN SAID WE’RE FOR CHANGING AND
EXPANDING.>>>>JOANNE: WE STAND TO GAIN A LOT OF MONEY.
ALONG WITH THIS MANDATE COMES FEDERAL MONEY.>>>>: THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PAYS FOR WUJ
HUNDRED% OF THE MEDI CAL EXPANSION. THERE’S A DIS MINISHING FEDERAL PERCENTAGE
AS YEARS GO BY, BUT BASICALLY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS PAYING FOR IT.
I’M WONDERING IF STATES WILL TAKE IT. YOU GET MORE PEEP WL BENEFITS.
>>>>JOANNE: I WANT TO TALK MORE ABOUT POLITICS. WE’VE HEARD THE HOUSE LEADER SAY WE’RE GOING
TO HOLD A VOTE JULYハ11 TO APPEAL THIS LAW. WE HAD REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN BRIAN IMIL BRAI,
FIRST QUESTION I ASKED ARE YOU GOING TO VOTE TO REPEAL THIS LAW, HE SIDE STEPPED THE QUESTION
AND DID SAY HE INTRODUCED LEGISLATION A COUPLE MONTHS AGO.
LEGISLATION THAT WOULD REQUIRE FUNDS TO GO INTO MEL O NOAM UH RESEARCH.
WE KNOW HIS DAUGHTER HAS BEEN PUBLIC WITH HER STRUGGLE THERE.
THE FUNDS COME FROM A TANNING BED FEE IMPOSED BY THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT.
IF HE REPEALS THE ACT THAT MEANS HIS LEGISLATIONハ SIVMENTD HE’S GOING TO GET HAMMERED BY HIS
OPPONENT, SCOTT PETERS. IF BRIAN BILBRAY COMES OUT AGAINST IT, THIS
DOESN’T MEAN MUCH VOTE THEY’RE GOING TO HOLD. IF HE PLAYS IT DOWN THE MIDDLE, HE’S GOING
TO LOOK LIKE A WEEZAL. THIS IS CALLED POLITICS.
SOMETIMES IT’S REAL TOUGH ON VERY DIFFICULT DIVISIVE ISSUES.
HE’S GOT A DIFFERENT DISTRICT THAN HE’S HAD BEFORE, LEANING TOWARDS THES THE DEMOCRATS.
>>>>: AFTER THE INTERVIEW Y DID THE INTERVIEW, THEN I WATCHED THE TAPE AND WALKED AWAY THINKING
NO HE’S NOT GOING TO VOTE TO REPEAL THIS ACT. IN FACT MY FOLLOW UP WAS YOU’RE NOT GOING
TO VOTE TO REPEAL THIS? I’M HEARING THAT’S NOT INCASE.
BRIAN BILBRAY, IF YOU’RE WATCHING, WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO DO JULYハ11.
TONY, THIS IS THE MT. SOLEDAD CROSS, A 20 YEAR CORE BATTLE?
>>>>: TWO DECADES, WE’VE BEEN FIGHTING WHETHER THAT CROSS SHOULD STAY ON PUBLIC LAND OR AS
AN ENDORSEMENT OF A PARTICULAR BRAND OF RELIGION AND THEREFORE UNCONSTITUTIONAL.
THE SUPREME COURT PUNTED AND SAID YOU DEAL WITH IT, COME BACK WHEN YOU HAVE A FINAL DECISION.
BACK IT GOES TO FEDERAL COURT IN DISAIRKS THEY SAID THE CROSS IS GCAN STAY, OVER TURNED
BY THE APPELLATE COURT IN SAN FRANCISCO, THAT’S HOW IT GOT TO THE SUPREME COURT, THE SUPREME
COURT SAID I DON’T THINK WE’LL DEAL WITH THIS TODAY.
GO ON BACK AND MAKE A FINAL DECISION, THEN BRING IT BACK TO US.
SO WE’VE HAD TWO DISEK AIDS, WE’RE GO TOOK HAVE YOU PICK IT, 12, 24 MORE MONTHS OF LIT
GATING.>>>>JOANNE: KENNY YOU’VE BEEN A REPORTER
IN SAN DIEGO A LONG TIME. PEOPLE FEEL STRONGLY ABOUT THIS, DON’T THEY?
>>>>: IT DOESN’T SEEM TO BE DIMINISHING OVER TIME.
SO YEAH, YOUR GUESS IS AS GOOD AS MINE. HERE WE GO AGAIN WITH THIS COURT BATTLE.
>>>>JOANNE: THINK ABOUT THE MONEY TIED UP IN ALL THIS THESE CASES.
>>>>: CITY OF SAN DIEGO WAS IN THE CASE AND SPENT HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AND
GOT EXHAUSTED BY IT UNTIL THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT STEPPED IN. GOOD FOLK ONS BOTH SIDES, PEOPLE
WHO FEEL THAT AS A MILITARY MEMORIAL AND A MILITARY TOWN THE PEOPLE SAY IT’S A HOLD OVER
FROM THE DAYS WE COULD SORT OF PUSH ONE RELIGION IN PEOPLE’S FACES REGARDLESS OF THE IDEA WE’RE
A MORE DIVERSE SOCIETY. THEY’VE CLASS CRASHED FOR TWO DECADES, AND
A LITTLE BIT LONGER. THE APPELLATE AND SUPREME COURT SUGGESTED
MAYBE THERE’S A COMPROMISE OUT THERE. I CAN’T FIGURE OUT WHAT IT IS, THAT CROSS
IS VISIBLE FROM INTERSTATE 5, A GROUP OF PEOPLE THINK IT’S OUT RAGE OWS IT’S THERE, IT VIOLATES
THEIR RIGHTS OTHER PEOPLE THINK WE’D BE BREAKING FAITH WITH PEOPLE WHO DIDN’T BREAK FAITH FOR
THE MILITARY FOLKS.>>>>: BACK TO THE COURTS WE GO.
>>>>JOANNE: OKAY, STILL WITH THE MILITARY. THE HIGH COURT RULED ON WHETHER IT’S LEGAL
TO LIE ABOUT BEING AWARDED THE MEDAL OF HONOR AND THEIR MILITARY HONORS.
WHAT DID THE COURT SAY?>>>>: SIX TO THREE, THE FIRST AMENDMENT GUARDS
LYING SPEECH, EVEN AS IT GUARDS MOTHERHOOD AND APPLE PIE AND THIS MAN OUT OF THE WATER
DISTRICT IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, HE DIDN’T TRY TO GET SOME MONEY FOR THIS BY CLAIMING
HE WAS A MEDALING OF HONOR RECIPIENT, DIDN’T TRY TO GET SOME BENEFITS, HE WAS JUST SHOOTING
HIS MOUTH OFF. SHOOTING YOUR MOUTH OFF ALONE IS NOT A VIOLATION
OF THE LAW AND SHOULD NOT BE. NOW, THE COURT ALSO IMPLIED THAT IF THE LEGISLATURE
WANTS TO GO BACK, THE CONGRESS WANTS TO GO BACK AND DEVISE A STRICTER LAW THAT SAYS IF
YOU USE ONE OF THESE MEDALS OR THE BOASTING OF A MEDAL TO GET SOMETHING, THE FRAUD PEOPLE,
THAT’S A WHOLE OTHER THING. JUST TO SHOOT YOUR MOUTH OFF AND IMPRESS THE
GUY AT THE END OF THE BAR, CONTEMPTIBLE IM HAIIVE YR, NOT ILLEGAL.
>>>>: IF I WANT TO WALK DOWN THE STREET IN A NAVY OFFICER’S UNIFORM AND HAVE PEOPLE SALUTED
ME, IS THAT LEGAL?>>>>: VERY DIFFICULT QUESTION.
ARE YOU IM PURSE IM PRS INNATING SOAR SOMEONE OR WAIT R WEARING A COSTUME.
IF YOU WALK DOWN THE STREET SAYING I’M A DETECTIVE FOR THE SAN DIEGO POLICE DEPARTMENT, ARE YOU
IM PERSON ATEINGA COP? I DON’T KNOW. SHOOTING YOUR MOUTH OFF LIKE THE FOAL OA DID
UP IN EASTERN LOS ANGELES COUNTY, DIFFERENT THING.
>>>>: IF I DON’T WEAR THE UNIFORM AND SAY I’M AN ADMIRAL, THAT’S OKAY.
>>>>JOANNE: YOU TRY IT THIS WEEKEND, KENNY. TELL US WHAT HAPPENS.
>>>>: I’LL HAVE AN INTERVIEW FROM JAIL FOR IMROW.
>>>>JOANNE: THANK YOU BOTH FOR BEING HERE AND SEND OUR VIEWERS OVER TO KPBS.ORG.
THANK YOU SO MUCH.>>>>DWANE: NOW THIS MIGHT JUST BE ONE OF
THE MOST UNUSUAL THINGS YOU’VE EVER SEEN AT SEA, EXPIS RR THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD, CALLED
THE FLOATING INSTRUMENT PLATFORM OR FLIP FOR SHORT.
SCRIPPS USES IT FOR RESEARCH. IT’S FLIP’S 50TH BIRTHDAY.
SCHOOL MAY BE OUT, BUT IT’S NOT KEEPINGA GROUP OF KIDS IN SAN DIEGO FROM EXPANDING THEIR
BRAINS. KATIE ORR EXPLAINS.
>>>>KATIE: THIS SUMMER KIDS IN SAN DIEGO ARE DOING THINGS LIKE DESIGNING SOLAR CARS
IN A PROGRAM DESIGNED TO GET THEM EXCITED ABOUT SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING.
>>>>: HERE IS THE SOLAR PANEL, THERE’S ATOMS AND ELECTRONS IN IT.
THEN HERE ARE THE GEARS, THERE’S ONE GEAR CONNECTED TO THE AXAL, AND THERE’S ONE CONNECTED
TO THE MOTOR, WHEN IT’S IN THE SUN, THE GEARS SPIN TO MAKE THE CAR MOVE.
>>>>: MALIA HUEITT IS ONE OF MANY KIDS TAKING PART IN THE SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY SEEK
CAMP, SUMMER ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE FOR KIDS. PUT ON BY THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS,
AIMED AT INTRODUCING MINORITY CHILDREN TO ENGINEERING.
HER FAVORITE PART OF CAMP IS ACTUALLY BUILDING THE CARS.
>>>>: ALL THE TEAMS COME TOGETHER AND WE START BUILDING BUT THEN WE’LL HAVE A PROBLEM,
THEN WE’LL ALL FIX IT AND DECIDE WHAT TO DO WITH IT AND IT ALL WORK SAID WORKS OUT.
>>>>KATIE: THEY ARE MENTORED BY COLLEGE STUDENTS MAJORING IN SCIENGS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING.
THEY HELP THE KIDS HOW SOLAR CARS WORK, THEN THEY HELP DESIGN, BUILD AND RACE THEIR OWN
CREATION. NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS EXECUTIVE
DIRECTER CARL MAK SAYS OF THE ENGINEERS THAT GRADUATE FROM UNIVERSITIES EACH YEAR, ONLY
ABOUT 3100 ARE AFRICAN AMERICAN.>>>>: I BELIEVE MOST OF OUR CHILDREN GRAVITATE
IT TO AGHT WHRETTICS AND ENTERTAINMENT BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT THEY’RE EXPOSED TO.
AT A VERY EARLY AGE. SO WHAT WE SAID IS LET US REDEFINE FROM ATHLETICS
AND ENTERTAINMENT TO ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE.>>>>KATIE: MAK SAYS GIVING THE KIDS HANDS
ON PROJECTS LET’S THEM SEE THE SUCCESS IN ACTION.
THIS YEAR’S CAMP IS DOUBLED THE SIZE OF LAST YEAR’S AND MAK SAYS SAN DIEGO IS A MAAED FRL
WHAT ALL THE SEEK CAMPS SHOULD BE.>>>>JOANNE: A NIGHT OF THE THEATER IS OFTEN
MEASURED IN TERMS OF ITS ENTERTAINMENT VALUE. DID WE LIKE THE PLAY OR DID WE NOD OFF DURING
THE SECOND ACT? WHAT ABOUT ITS ECONOMIC VALUE. AUDIENCES SPEND MONEY TO SEE A PLAY, THEY
MIGHT GO OUT TO DINNER AND PAY A BABY SITTER. A WHRAWT OF US MAKE COMPARISONS TO OTHER CITIES.
COCHAIR OF THE SAN DIEGO REGIONAL ARLT ARLTS AND CULTURE COALITION JOIN ME.
I WANT TO GET INTO THE NUMBERS BECAUSE IT’S A LITTLE BIT SURPRISING WHEN YOU SEE THE ECONOMIC
SPIN OFF. TELL US FIRST OF ALL HOW DOES SAN DIEGO STACK
UP WHEN WE LOOK AT OTHER CITIES OF COMPARABLE SIZE.
>>>>: SAN DIEGO STACKS UP VERY STRONG. YOU KNOW, WE LOVE THE ARTS THEY INSPIRE US,
THEY DELIGHT US, THEY’RE A FUNDAMENTAL COMPONENT OF OUR HUMANITY, BUT THEY HAVE BOTH CULTURAL
AND ECONOMIC BENEFITS WHAT WE FOUND IN SAN DIEGO SPENDING BY NON PROFITS ARTS ASSOCIATIONS
GENERATES OVER 272ハMILLION DOLLARS JUST IN HIRING LOCAL ARYKS PURCHASING GOODS, AND
THAT INDUCES 373 MORE MILLION DOLLARS IN SPENDING BY ARTS AUDIENCES, DINNER, PARKING, YOU KNOW.
SO 665ハMILLION DOLLARS OF ECONOMIC ACTIVITY, A HUGE SUM OF DOLLARS AND WELL AHEAD OF THE
COMMUNITY THIS SIZE.>>>>JOANNE: WE HAVE THE NUMBERS ON THE SCREEN
FOR THE PEOPLE UP AT HOME. 79ハMILLION DOLLARS, THE COUNTY KICKS IN
ANOTHER 86ハMILLION DOLLARS, MORE THAN 665ハMILLION DOLLARS.
WE ALSO LOOKED AT YOIR STUDY LIKE A CITY LIKE PHOENIX, WE GENERATED ALMOST TWICE THE SPENDING.
DOES THAT SURPRISE YOU? YOU WERE IN A LOCAL ARTS THEATER.
>>>>: YES, AND NO. ANECDOTALLY, THOSE OF US WHO WORK IN ARTS
AND CULTURE, WE KNOW THE IMPACT WE HAVE IN A NUMBER OF INDUSTRIES, FROM RESTAURANTS,
HOTELS IT, PARKING, AND THE SAN DIEGANS COMMISSION FOR ARTS AND CULTURE PRO PRODUCES AN IMPACT
REPORT. WHAT’S LOVELY ABOUT THIS REPORT IS THAT IT
GOES BEYOND THE CITY AND THE NUMBERS ARE QUITE ASTONISHING AND VAL DISAITING AND THAT IT’S
A THIRD PARTY, SOMEBODY OUTSIDE THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO, AND THE COUNTY OF SAN DIEGO THAT
HAS DONE THIS STUDY. IT’S VERY VALIDATING FOR ALL OF US.
>>>>JOANNE: RANKED ROONDY, DISID DID THE STUDY BREAK IT DOWN?
>>>>: TO GET AT THE AUDIENCE SPENDING WE WORK WITH ART POSTS WITH THE COUNTY WIDE ARTS
AND TOGETHER WE DID OVER 800 AUDIENCE INTERCEPT SURVEYS.
WE WENT AND MET TO A RANGE OF ARTS EVENTS ACROSS THE COUNTY AND JUST ASKED ATTENDEES
HOW MUCH MONEY DID YOU SPEND RELATED TO THIS EVENT ON FOOD, TRANSPORTATION, LODGING, DOWN
THE LINE. THEN WE ASKED EACH ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WE
INTERVIEWED OVER 800 IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY FOR THEIR ZIP CODE, WE WANTED TO FIND OUT DO THEY
LIVE IN THE COUNTY, 17% OF THE ATTENDEES COME FROM OUTSIDE THE COUNTY.
>>>>JOANNE: LET’S TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT POLITICS.
IMIG ELECTIONS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW, WE HAVE TWO MAYORAL CANDIDATES, BOB FILNER AND CARL
DEMAIO. THE CITY DOES PROVIDE SOME SEED MONEY.
WHAT ARE YOU ASK THK CANDIDATES RIGHT NOW?>>>>: WE ARE ASKING THE CANDIDATES WHAT THEIR
PU SWRIGDZS ARE WITH REGARDS TO PUBLIC ARTS FUNDING.
THE TWO CANDIDATES HAVE WHAT APPEARS TO BE VERY DIFFERENT POSITIONS.
I WANT TO PREFS THIS BY SAYING THIS IS MY PERSONAL INTERPRETATION OF WHAT THE CANDIDATES
ARE SAYING. CANDIDATE DEMAIO HAS IN HIS ROAD MAP TO RECOVERY
TALKED ABOUT CUTTING ARTS AND CULTURE BY 25%, FOCUSING ONLY ON LARGE ORGANIZATIONS AND CHALLENGES
THE CURRENT ALLOCATIONS PROCESS. I RUN A SMALL NON PROFIT THEATER COMPANY THAT
IS WOMEN OWNED, MINORITY RUN, AND WE FOCUS ON REPRESENTING DIVERSE VOICES IN THE COMMUNITY.
WE FIND THE COMMISSION’S CURRENT PROCESS TO BE VERY OPEN, FAIR, TRANSPARENT, AND RESPONSIBLE.
WHEN I HEAR CANDIDATE COUNCILMAN DEMAIO CHALLENGE THAT, I QUESTION IT.
>>>>JOANNE: WE DON’T HAVE A LOT OF TIME LEFT. HAS BOB FILNER RESPONDED AT ALL?
>>>>: WHEN HE TALKS ABOUT THE ARTS, HE TALKS ABOUT INCREASING ARTS FUNDING AND TALKS ABOUT
ART FOR ARTS SAKE. HE SAYS WE KNOW THE RETURN ON INVESTMENT,
LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT IT DOES FOR COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION AS WELL.
>>>>JOANNE: THESE NUMBERS DON’T INCLUDE THE ECONOMIC SPIN OFF FROM COMIC CON.
I WOULD ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO GO TO KPBS.ORG. TO LOOK AT MORE ON THESE STORIES.
>>>>JOANNE: TONIGHT IN THE PUBLIC SQUARE I AM SIGNING OFF AS HOST OF EVENING EDITION.
THIS IS MY FINAL SHOW. I LOVED SITTING HERE AT THE ROUND TABLE, ACROSS
COUNTY SUPERVISORS, A NEWLY ELECTED JUDGE, THE ATTORNEY WHO SUCCESSFULLY ARGUED ROW V
WADE, SCIENTISTS, ACTORS, PLAY WRITES, THE MIDDLE AGE MAN WHO QUIT HIS JOB TO TAKE CARE
OF HIS AGING PARENTS. WHAT AN HONOR TO HAVE THIS FRONT ROW SEAT,
ASKING QUESTIONINGS ON YOUR BEHALF. YOU’VE ALWAYS BEEN MY GUIDE, AND INSPIRATION,
MY COURAGE IN THE MOST DIFFICULT MOMENTS IN AN INTERVIEW.
THANK YOU. AND TO ALL OF YOU WHO WROTE WHEN I GOT IT RIGHT AND WHEN I DIDN’T, TO SHARE
YOUR OPINION, FRUSTRATION AND OBSERVATIONS, THANK YOU FOR YOUR E MAILS AND TWEETS.
I’LL STILL BE HERE AT KPBS WORKING AS AN INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER.
I WILL ALSO BE ON THE SHOW FROM TIME TO TIME WITH SPECIAL REPORTS.
