>>>>DWANE BROWN: THE SUMMER ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE
FOR KIDS OR SEAT PROGRAM WRAPPED UP ITS THREEWEEK RUN AT LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL WHERE 600 ELEMENTARY
AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS LEARNED THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGINEERING FROM PEOPLE ALREADY IN THE
BUSINESS. WHAT LOOKS LIKE FUN AND GAMES IS REALLY ABOUT
EXPOSING INNER CITY KIDS TO THE FIELD OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY.
600 KIDS FROM THIRD TO EIGHTH GRADE SPENT THREE WEEKS WITH ADULT MENTORS LEARNING THE
FUNDAMENTALS, THEN APPLYING THEM TO RACE CARS THEY BUILT TO TEST THEIR SPEED, DISTANCE,
AND ACCURACY. MARNIE FOSTER IS A SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEE AND
SAYS THE PROGRAM IS ANOTHER WAY TO HELP CLOSE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP BETWEEN BLACK AND BROWN
STUDENTS.>>>>: IT CAN EXTENDS THE LEARNING IN A POSITIVE
WAY, IT PROMOTES SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATH, AND WE KNOW WE NEED TO DEVELOP STUDENTS
IN HAVING A CONNECTION TO THOSE CAREERS.>>>>DWANE BROWN: AND CONNECTIONS TO MENTORS
WHO ARE ALREADY SUCCESSFUL. BRADY GORDON IS A CHEMICAL ENGINEER FOR THE
NAVY. HE SAYS SAN DIEGO HAS THE LARGEST PROGRAM
OUT OF TWELVE CAMPS ACROSS THE COUNTRY PUT ON THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS.
50% OF THE STUDENTS ARE FEMALE.>>>>: OUT OF WASHINGTON D.C. HE WANTED TO
IMPACT ALL OF THE UNDER SERVED KIDS IN THE COMMUNITY.
WE WENT AFTER OUR YOUNG FEMALE STUDENTS AND EVERY OTHER DIVERSE THAT MADE OUR KIDS UNIQUE
IN BEING THE UNDER SERVED MEMBER OF THE ENGINEERING COMMUNITY.
>>>>DWANE BROWN: WITH THE HELP OF SPONSORS LIKE SDG&E HOPE TO GROW THE PROGRAM AS THE
RACE TO GET MORE KIDS INTERESTED IN SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, TECHNOLOGY, AND MATH CONTINUES.
THE PROGRAM HAS GROWN FROM 150 STUDENTS THREE YEARS AGO, TO MORE THAN 600 THIS YEAR, AND
100 ADULT MENTORS.
