Having a bachelor’s of
science in communication, it gave me a sense of competence
because I was first generation, first person in my family to have gone
to college. So it really meant something, but I didn’t know how
important it was to have. I understood that I had gone to school, I understood that I had received
a full ride scholarship. I understood I had a
degree in communications. I had a master’s degree in
business administration, and so many other people
who look like me who don’t, so many other people who look
like me who can, could, should. And so that’s kind of became my personal
purpose: How do I give this back? But it’s about how do I give back all
this institutional knowledge that I’ve been able to gain in the last 36 years. How do you give it back so that the
next person who’s coming alongside your footsteps, they don’t have to make either the same
mistakes or they can understand their purpose a little bit earlier. I really think that my communications
degree has really helped me, in terms of how I’m able to carry myself
going across platforms or across a bridge. You think you’re just
taking a course or a class, but then once you get into real life
and you begin to apply it and not only apply, but understand that you’ve
already been doing it, to then say, Huh, now maybe I want to dive a little deeper
into what this is or what that is. Folks ask, how did I get into
the industry that I’m in? It wasn’t anything that I researched. It wasn’t anything that
when I went to school, I said that this is what I want to do. I didn’t have a mentor that I talked
to about getting into this field, but once I got into the field,
just like with anything else in life, once you begin to apply yourself,
I just really woke up and, understood that my purpose
was public service.
