DEBATE – ETHICAL FASHION

we are very lucky today to have representatives from the industry associations and also from the private sector to tell us about how they are making a difference thank you so much for being with us thanks for sharing your experiences in the capacity for that platform so I'd like to start by asking you how the transparency and traceability systems or experiences can foster sustainable practices in that regard the good news is a well-placed working for gs1 we are developing the standards in this area and what we've seen over the last year is due to different reasons also from from the companies themselves but also from government there they require more and more transparency and more traceability in the area having more information on the products all over the supply chain gives you more possibilities on what to do with the product at a certain point and really move it into a circular economy at a certain point so yes it's quite positive but it's also a necessary necessity to have this kind of transparency working for the belgian industry federation carrier Moda we represent a lot of SMEs and basically our SMEs have been in competition globally with companies that claim a lot but it's very very hard to verify those claims and we set up a program we are testing out a working method called be aware where we are going to see if we can substantiate all those claims that are being made well it's about the environment we're about the social labor all these aspects of doing your business and explaining why your product is better than the other one transparency is crucial because if you want to do a positive impact you have to know to room with what and therefore you have to know all the partners in the supply chain we don't have any transparency how we want to address sustainability issues and we are doing at the moment several activities one is asking our direct supplies by the way we have disclosed all our direct supplies on our portal we also a part of the open up a registry coalition we're also there we have published them all but the problem is not that our first year the problem is more second third year or even getting down to cotton field and at the moment we do it like this that of course due to several easy tip that force the sustainability like this you discharged we are asking our supplier which which dye means they are working or we ask our supplies from who they buying cotton so they gain an understanding enough forest and steer all our activities to more sustainable practices with this information but what we are really looking interest now to set up an approach an ecosystem which I hope today I had the chance to explain in a way that we can of course jointly store share information which at the moment that I think is the biggest issue in our industry that we cannot easily exchange information that sometimes needs to be secured needs to be not public to all just to a few and that's what we are looking into having this next step transparency trust bility sustainability quality linked together in many ways if we visualize an imaginary pyramid the top of the pyramid is the transparency the inference ability sustainability and the base of the pyramid is quality and then not only the meal quality of the product in the entire quality of the process the production the quality of work condition and and Sun from the point of view of the manufacturing process the the primary focus is under the ingredients ingredient means the origin in case a company's verticalized it would be more easier but in any case especially the origin of abnormal materials is from it's from country where in the working condition and not necessarily at the top so first of all transparent traceability and transparency must enhance the the clear and clear and reliable information about the raw materials we have been mentioning in our conversation information new technologies also quality in your opinion what could be the challenges but also the opportunity of this so-called concept of the ethical fashion industry it's crucial to have the same way to evaluate sustainable performances both social and environmental and so it's necessary the collaboration and the support of many organization for every single aspect of of production in order to find my standards I think the opportunities for transparency are being and I think there may need to the stakeholders be it our consumers but also any other stakeholders because if you start to be transparent you create a certain trust and Trust is loyalty nice I think especially in today's times where you want to know more about your clothes as you wear what you want tomorrow where the conditions are in your factory so that will change completely the way we can communicate with the consumers on the other side of course count is direct order to impose change by introduction of laws and I think this will be probably the two most driving systems that will anyway push us to more transparency in our opinion we think it is important that transparency and traceability enables you to make an informed choice whether you are a buyer doing public procurements whether you are a consumer like all of us here having the information about the product you want or the service you want to buy is also critical to get it into something that helps us our circular economy that's the whole aim in the end that we want to achieve and for that you need information you need information that is reliable relays information that you can verify this is our driver let's say and this is as what we see as the opportunity it will also be a challenge for those companies that do not want to be transparent and are not hundred percent correct for them to survive in this new world I don't think there's room for them anymore they might need to change to a different sector I agree and it'sit's a very good question you can always ask yourself why in this particular sector there is today not that much transparency is it because the supply chain is too complex that we are not able to do it or is it because we are not willing to do it and and not want to disclose certain kind of information to it to the public the good news is that the fashion industry is really changing there they understand that that they have to do things different if not for the public public opinion and they want to change and the big challenge will be how to do this change so thank you very much for being with us today thanks a lot for sharing your work in the capacity for the platform I hope you enjoy the rest of the European development days and we are very sure that other companies are going to be inspired by your stories and by your commitment thank you so much
