Hi, I’m Vincent Rhodes, I’m the Assistant Vice President for Marketing and Communications at Eastern Virginia Medical School and this is my Coming Out Story. I had— built up all this dread, about coming out all through my pre-teen/teen, early twenties— and, after I got my first job I had moved away from home and was starting to feel more comfortable about myself long story short, slipped, with the wrong pronoun at the wrong time and accidentally came out to a co-worker or mine, who preceded to jump up and down, throw her arms around me and say, “I am so happy for you, and so excited for you!” I think everybody oughta have that coming out experience. It’s clearly challenging—it’s really really difficult and it’s incredibly scary, and not all coming out goes well with family or friends but it’s so worth doing it, in the end. The stress that gets relieved. Being able to be who you are and love who you wanna love is such an important thing.
