BUT THE SAD REALITY IS… EVERY YEAR THERE ARE MORE THAN 2 MILLION DOGS AND CATS IN NEED OF A FOREVER HOME. SO NBC STATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE BANDING TOGETHER…. FOR AN EVENT CALLED “CLEAR THE SHELTERS.” NBC15’S AMY PFLUGSHAUPT VISITED THE IOWA COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY TO SEE WHAT IT TAKES TO RUN THE SHELTER ON A DAILY BASIS. THE BEHIND THE SCENES WORK IT TAKES TO GET THESE CUTE FACES READY FOR ADOPTION ISN’T ALWAYS THE MOST GLAMOUROUS… AND IT’S NOT CHEAP. : : 2:40:53:12 – COME ON OSCAR… UP… UP… UP… KITTY KITTY. 24 HOURS A DAY…. NATS – OF DIESEL THIS IS AN IMPORTANT PART IN MATCHING THESE ANIMALS WITH THEIR FOREVER FAMILY. NATS OF JERSEY JERSEY… A PIT/DOBERMIN MIX IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE. THIS THREE AND A HALF YEAR OLD… IS BELIEVED TO HAVE HAD A ROUGH LIFE BEFORE COMING TO THE SHELTER. “SHE IS A LITTLE WARY OF STRANGERS AT FIRST, BUT ONCE SHE WARMS UP TO YOU ((WOLF, WOLF)) SHE’S VERY VERY SWEET. :38:07” NAT OF JERSEY JENNIFER SIEGEL IS THE OUTREACH MANAGER FOR THE IOWA COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY. SHE SAYS RIGHT NOW, JERSEY IS THE LONGEST STAYING RESIDENT AT THE SHELTER… “IT’S BEEN ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF. IT’S JUST WITH THE RIGHT FAMILY THE RIGHT SITUATION SHE’S GOING TO BE THE PERFECT DOG. ” THANKS TO COUNTLESS VOLUNTEERS AND A HANDFUL OF DEDICATED EMPLOYEES AT THIS NO-KILL SHELTER EVERY ANIMAL – INCLUDING JERSEY – WILL ONE DAY HAVE A HOME. BUT IT COMES WITH A PRICE, AT A PLACE THAT RUNS ON DONATIONS. “FINANCIALLY WE’RE DOING OKAY, BUT IT’S ALWAYS A STRUGGLE. 08:01 THIS TIME OF YEAR WE HAVE A LOT OF ANIMALS. WE’RE COMING THROUGH WHAT WE CALL KITTEN SEASON. WHERE ALL OF A SUDDEN WE’RE JUST FULL OF ANIMALS. :19” HERE’S A BREAK DOWN OF THE NUMBERS… SIEGELS SAYS ON AVERAGE… IT COSTS ABOUT $8.22 CENTS PER ANIMAL PER DAY. GENERALLY AN ANIMAL WILL BE AT THE SHELTER FOR 93 DAYS… TOTALLYING $756.00 FOR CARE PER ANIMAL. “IF YOU CAN’T GIVE FINANCIALLY, YOU CAN VOLUNTEER THAT HELPS ALOT TOO.
