Changes to Douglas County Roads

THOSE WHO LIVE NORTH AND WEST OF CITY LIMITS — HAVE NOTICED SOME STREETS HAVE BEEN “TARRED AND GRAVELED”. IT’S NOT YOUR TYPICAL ASPHALT JOB. OUR COLLIN RUANE JOINS US LIVE FROM ONE OF THOSE ROADS THAT ARE GETTING SOME WORK DONE. WE’RE JUST OFF 114TH STREET BETWEEN STATE AND IDA. THIS IS ONE OF THE ROADS THAT GOT WORKED ON TODAY. AND THAT’S EASY TO TELL WITH HOW DARK THE ROAD IS RIGHT NOW. WE WANT TO SHOW YOU SOME OF THE VIDEO AS CREWS GOT THIS WORK DONE. IT’S CALLED AN ARMOR COAT. THIS SUMMER — IT’S GETTING DONE ON ABOUT 40 MILES OF ROADS OUTSIDE THE CITY LIMITS. NOW IT’S NOT ASPHALT. THIS ROAD WAS ACTUALLY GETTING COVERED WITH OIL AND GRATED GRAVEL. THE DOUGLAS COUNTY ENGINEER’S OFFICE TELLS ME IT’S DONE TO GET SOME MORE LIFE OUT OF THE COUNTY’S ROADS AT ABOUT AN EIGHTH OF THE COST OF LAYING DOWN ASPHALT. IF YOU DO DRIVE ON ONE OF THESE ROADS SHORTLY AFTER WORK IS DONE — YOU MIGHT WANT TO BE PREPARED FOR A LITTLE EXTRA NOISE. DAN KUTILEK SAYS, “I’D SAY THE PUBLIC JUST NEEDS TO BE PATIENT WITH US AND OUR CONTRACTOR. WE UNDERSTAND IT DOES CAUSE INCONVENIENCES, BUT IT’S MINOR INCONVENIENCES, REALLY.” THE GOOD NEWS IS — EVEN THOUGH THERE MIGHT BE SOME LOOSE PIECES OF GRAVEL — IT DOESN’T POSE A SAFETY RISK. THE OFFICE TELLS ME THE MAIN COMPLAINTS ARE RELATED TO IT ADDING SOME TIME ONTO THE MORNING COMMUTE — AND THE OCCASIONAL CLAIM OF A SMALL CHIP ON YOUR WINDSHIELD. COLLIN — WHERE ELSE ARE DRIVERS SEEING THIS WORK DONE? THERE’S A STRETCH OF 252ND STREET FROM RAINWOOD TO ABOUT IDA.. AND DRIVERS ON 96TH STREET CAN SEE IT FROM RAINWOOD TO IRVINGTON JUST TO NAME A COUPLE THANK YOU!
