"Black Panther" Is Not Only About Black Empowerment, It's Also Empowering For Women

– The Black Panther allowed
me to really go back and really delve into ancient
African history and honor it. (upbeat music) I had noticed from a lot
of the superhero costumes of the past–even
Superman–have a texture. They have a surface texture to them, and we decided that we
would also create muscles that looked like they were
made out of Vibranium. On top, went this thin skin, and we infused a small triangular pattern called the Okavango pattern. In Africa, all throughout the continent, there is the sacred
geometry of the triangle, and we felt that if we incorporated
this triangular pattern throughout the suit, we
could make a superhero who was also an African king. So I received the Dora Milaje
sketch from Ryan Meinderding, and it was a beautiful warrior costume. There were elements, though,
that I felt we could infuse into the drawing. And one of those elements
was the story behind Africa, the story of the beads, the
story of the neck rings, the story of the jewelry, the
story of women as fighters. So, I think that to show strong women in other multi-dimensional ways, where they're not necessarily showing all of their body, you know. Lots of little girls don't
like showing their bodies, but they can put on a Dora Milaje costume and really feel like they're
kickass young ladies. So I'm so happy to present the Dora Milaje to the young girls who
want to feel empowered, who want to be a Dora. When you think about films
like Gone With the Wind and classics, Do the Right Thing, I hope Black Panther is in the same league as those films, films that
people feel changed America in some way, opened up the consciousness of America in some way.
