Ammonia Leak Leads To Concert Evacuation

CHEVRON HOUSTON MARATHON FORECAST COMING UP. THANKS SO MUCH, KHAMBREL. THIS MORNING ALL IS BACK TO NORMAL EAST OF DOWNTOWN HOUSTON AFTER AN AMMONIA LEAK OVERNIGHT. OFFICIALS TRACED THE SOURCE OF THE LEAK TO A MEAT PROCESSING PLANT AT ENNIS AND DALLAS STREETS. BUT WHILE THEY WERE SEARCHING, MANY PEOPLE WERE CONCERNED. CHANNEL 2’S GIANNA CASERTA IS LIVE NEAR DOWNTOWN. GIANNA, WHAT CAN YOU TELL US? Reporter: WELL, THAT’S RIGHT, SOFIA. A LOT OF PEOPLE WERE CONCERNED. THE GOOD NEWS HERE IS THAT THE SMELL WAS NEVER HAZARDOUS BUT WE WERE GETTING CALLS AT THE STATION FROM SEVERAL PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THIS AREA SAYING THE SMELL WAS JUST AWFUL AND IT WAS VERY STRONG. PEOPLE ALSO CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. AND WHEN THEY GOT OUT HERE, IT WAS AROUND 10:00 LAST NIGHT. THIS IS VIDEO OF WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE. BUT IT WAS AROUND 10:00 LAST NIGHT WHEN PEOPLE WHO LIVED IN THIS AREA CALLED FIRE FIGHTERS BECAUSE THEY SMELLED THAT STRONG AMMONIA SMELL. WHEN FIRE FIGHTERS ARRIVED AT THE SCENE, THEY REALIZED THE SMELL WAS COMING FROM FRIEDMAN MEATS, A FOOD PROCESSING PLANT. A PIPE IN THE AMMONIA LINE WAS BROKEN. AMMONIA IS USED TO REVEREND STRAIGHT — FOR REFRIGERATION IN THE PLANT. THEY VENTILATED THE BUILDING. AND FIRE FIGHTERS SAY A CONCERT THAT WAS BEING HELD NOT TOO FAR AWAY, EVERYONE INSIDE WAS EVACUATED BECAUSE THE SMELL WAS SO STRONG. BUT AS I MENTIONED, NOBODY WAS HURT. NOBODY HAD TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL BECAUSE THE SMELL WAS NEVER HAZARDOUS. REPORTING LIVE NEAR DOWNTOWN,
