5 Exercises That Are Terrible For Your Back

famous physical therapists on the internet. – In our opinion of course Bob. – Yeah we’re gonna talk
about five exercises that are terrible for your back. This is based on the work
of Dr. Stuart Biguel. I know some of you will
not agree with this video. Tough, that’s the oh, I mean
this is based on but I’m really heavily done research. This guy he doesn’t
leave any stone unturned, I mean he really goes at it. – This is his life. – Yeah this is his life. – Right. – By the way if you’re new

and I think this one’s not controversial at all most
people know this one Brad. You wanna show it? – Sure I’ll show it. – I’ll have you hurt your back doing this. Now it’s a full sit ups with
either a straight leg raise or with the knee bent, either way is bad. – So yeah we’re talking about,
this is a very traditional. When I was in grade school this
is what everyone had to do. – [Bob] Yeah and they would
measure how many you could do in a minute or whatever. – Now that was– – That’s very hard on the disc
very hard on the lower back. If you bend your knees just
as bad that’s not helping at all either. All right Brad I don’t
want you to hurt your back. Next one. – People are gonna ask how do we do them? We do have videos on
how to do core exercise. – Core exercises without
hurting your back. This is the one that surprised
Brad today but he did extensive studies on this
measuring the pressure in the lower back. – I didn’t do them Dr. McGill did. – Dr. McGill did, so
here’s the Superman pose. So you’re up like this like Superman, but you’re also bringing
your legs up like this. Really high compressive
forces on the low back. I know this is very common,
we actually Brad, I think we actually even mentioned this in a video. – Oh yeah. I think it does do a good job
of strengthening the muscles but the negative part is
it puts a lot of stress on the spine. – And shows you that we’re evolving too, we’re willing to learn, we don’t know everything,
and you know as we learn we pass it on to you. Next one again not a
big surprise here Brad, this is toe touches. So you try to basically lean
forward and touch your toes it’s a little better if you
can keep your back straight and go down and go all the
way down but it’s really just not good for your back. – There are so many other
better alternatives and we do have videos on those too we’re
not gonna talk about them now but we do, and maybe we
should make some more. But yeah that’s– – Yeah the whole thing with
toe touches is what are you trying to accomplish? One you just try to
stretch your hamstrings. – Right. – But a lot of people are trying
to stretch their lower back and you don’t wanna stretch
your lower back like that you wanna keep it stable
and like a good solid core. – Right. – So next one kind of falls
along the same line is the wind mill. Where you know we have people
doing toe touching like this. – Right. – And now you’re bending
and twisting which is even harder on your back. So, it’s harder on the disk. – And again there’s, if
you keep your back straight and you hinge at the hips. – Vast majority of people
aren’t gonna be able to do it correctly, and even if
they do it’s still a lot of tore if you think about
the physics of it you know you’re putting the, you
are the physics guy, but it’s a lot more
stress on the low back. – Right you know I agree
with all of that Bob. – Okay, the next one to, a
little bit controversial here, but again there’s an easier way to do it is a double leg raise. So I’m down like this and
I lift it up like this and just puts too much tork
great way for working the core too much core, too much
tork on the low back. Now alternative is you put
your hands underneath here to give you some support to the low back and instead of doing
double just do single ones going back and forth like this. I do these all the time. – Yeah but the bicycle ride. – Yeah the bicycle ride, I
even do a little bit of head going up like this at the same time. – Sure. – It’s not, that’s a good work out, yeah that would work the front
abdomen and lower abdomen and it’ll start to stabilize that core. – You exercise like this at home or? – In a tie yes I like to always look good when I’m working out. I’ll go to the gym and
I’ll work out like this. – I just say that because we get comments. – Sometimes I wear a full suit. I like to wear a tux even. – You’re killing me Bob. – Remember Brad and I are not just pretty. – We’re pretty ugly. – No we’re pretty helpful and

  5. Bob and Brad, you crack me up (pun intended) ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. Great info tho because when I was part of a workout group, those were the exact exercises they put us to do until I had to quit due to severe back pain. Lo and behold, I was diagnosed with spondylitis ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ.

  6. Almost no one recognizes them for being hard on the back. They are all still VERY prevalent exercises, even among fitness professionals. One thing I can say, PT's will never lack patients. I just happened to see a video of a guy doing really deep squats with a humongously loaded barbell–and I just don't get it. I love weight lifting, but SANE weight lifting. Is the risk of blowing up body parts REALLY worth lifting super-excessive amounts of weight? But I digress…

  7. Great stuff, boys! I have to say, I'm not surprised about the supermans. I've always done then without lifting my legs up because it seems to instantly make my back spasm. I wasn't clear, though, are they just as bad for your back if you do them without the leg raise?

She developed scoliosis (curvature of the spine) while traveling all around the world sleeping on the floor and a having a very heavy backpack. She gives a specific details on why these exercises she put together and why they need to be done their this particular forms

  12. Please do more videos for core strengthening and other things good for the lower back or at least that will not be bad for the back … to replace these that we should not do. Love you two…watch you a lot and forward to others .I DO agree …have had a lifetime of dancing, in my seventies and still dance more than many young people and teach too…and i have had issues with these myself. I like Feledenkrais work if you want to look into that .

  15. I can't tell you how many of these I did every day in a rehab hospital, just three years ago, after a serious stroke. the p.t.'s there should have extremely frequent and more important <pertinent> c.e.'s.

  17. What if we do the superman one with single legs. One leg up at a time? I didnโ€™t know this one was high risk. I will stop it. But the single leg still high risk? I really respect these type of videos. We need it.

  18. Some of the exercises you show we do to strengthen the belly to support the back. So what exercise do you recommend to strengthen the back?

  19. I love you guys and watch your videos all the time! I am a triathlete, yogini and a dancer and really use your tips. Toe touches/forward bends and Superman pose are encouraged by many yoga instructors so I need to re-think them. The " windmill " is one that many of my dance teachers love to use along with a torso rotation as a warmup move. Personally, I think this movement is really dangerous esp. in warmup- it feels terrible so I have to believe my body is telling me something even if it does look very "dancey". Just not worth blowing a disk.

There are probably moisture wicking shirts that have suits or tuxedos printed on them so you can wear them to the gym, look like James Bond while you are working out, and then go save the world afterward. But on a more serious note – most of these exercises are definitely not a good thing to do if you are already having trouble with low back pain; you need to work on strengthening the core muscles first so you can take some of the strain off the muscles in the lower back and be patient with yourself. For me, it took a few years and that is because I was following yoga routines at home. I learned how much of a range of motion I could tolerate, got some stuff to loosen up, and didn't try to force any of the poses. Occasionally I do something that feels fine at the time until the next day when my back & neck tell me that they are not happy about it, but not very often. It's pretty cool feel like I am aging in reverse, sort of – everyone else is starting to have joint stiffness or other medical problems, and while I do have some issues that I have to be wary of aggravating it is nice to be able to have such flexibility in my 50s.

  23. I stopped my exercise classes because I had crippling back pains the next day. Guess what? we did all of the exercises shown here. In fact the touch toes one was a 90 degree bend with arms extended straight out not down. No wonder my back is in in spasm 6 months on!

  24. I have a shooting pain in my right buttock when I move it a certain way. Sometimes when I walk, I also feel a shooting pain on the right side from halfway below my knee to my ankle. Can you tell me what it is & what exercises to do to make the pain go away permanently? I walk to work (5 miles+ on weekdays) & almost everywhere else & Iโ€™d hate to lose this form of transportation because of injury/pain.
