10 Things About Ella Mai You Should Know! | Billboard

– Hi, this is Billboard, and
you should know me, Ella Mai. I grew up in two different
places, actually. I was born and raised in
London, in South London, but I actually moved to
New York when I was 12. I moved to Jamaica, Queens, and I spent five years in New York. So, in between London and New York. My guilty pleasure is
a mint chocolate bar. (laughing) The first time I was starstruck
was when I saw Beyonce, and I didn’t actually meet her, didn’t have a conversation or anything, but I was in the same room
as her and she walked… I remember she walked in the
room and I literally just… I was just mid-conversation
with someone, by the way, and I was just like… The best gift I’ve ever received? I’m a very sentimental person,
and I don’t have it on today because I have on this high neck shirt, but my best friends… I’ve had the same best friends
since I was three years old, it’s three of us, and they bought me a
necklace for my 21st birthday that has each of our initial on it and a key with a 21 on it. So, I always wear it. The last show I binge
watched was ‘Insecure.’ I can’t wait for season three. I’m like (screams). My biggest accomplishment
thus far has been, obviously, breaking top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 with number six with “Boo’d Up.” So, (clicks teeth). To find out my song made the top 10 was honestly a dream come true. I think it’s something
that I’ve dreamed about, and anyone dreams about, their whole life. So, to actually see it
and read it and be like, with my name with the song and the number has been incredible, and it’s still… I still have to pinch myself to know that this is actually happening. If I could collaborate with any artist, it would definitely by Lauryn Hill because she’s my favorite. My very first performance was actually when I was really little because I used to go to
performing arts school when I was young. So, I remember being in a theater school, and we performed West Side Story, which is my favorite
musical, and I was Anita. The process of creating, for me, changes a little bit depending
on where I am head space wise and where I am in the
world because atmosphere and energy and environment, I
think, affect me quite a lot, but for the most part, it’s I start… I’ll listen to a beat or
I will start from scratch and make the beat based off of just what we’d like to hear that day. So, whatever sticks and sounds good, and then I’ll go with the melody
and lay some melodies down and pick whichever one sticks
and kind of put it where, oh, that sounds like a chorus,
that sounds like a verse, and then we go to the lyrics, but I normally come in not
so much with a whole concept, but I’ll sit down and
speak and be like okay, this is how I’m feeling today, and that’s normally how we come across… Come up with the concept of the song. People should listen to my music because it’s very
genuine, it’s very honest, and it’s a lot about the vocal rather than everything else
that goes on in the song. ♪ Boo’d up ♪ ♪ Biddy-da-dum, boo’d up ♪

  2. To just hear her actually talk and hear her accent is like wowww๐Ÿ˜‚ I already knew but Iโ€™m still shook๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ”ฅ

  3. You are so beautiful. But if your a writer of your on music I wouldn't get a company to do your label. So many artists do there on thing and make more funds in the future than with a label. You should have done it yourself. I thing people would love you anyway. You have talent ; write your on songs; and you are beautiful. You don't need anybody to help you. The media would decide that and you would come out really good. I know I would have voted yes in deeded for you. All these talent shows on T.V. and you would bound to be a winner. Just my opinion. dj.t-Roy
